What is this? Do i need it?

I know this is a stupid question, but what is this thing in the picture circled in red? Is it a charcoal canister? Do i need this thing? It looks like there are a couple vacuum lines going into it. I want to clean my engine bay up and this thing looks like a good contender to go.

It's your charcoal canister that is used to collect gasoline vapors from your gas tank and dump them into the intake at start up. You probably need it to pass emissions.

disturbedfan121 09-29-2009 12:29 AM

charcoal canister. only for emissions. i pulled mine. just gotta loop lines i think

ARTech 09-29-2009 12:34 AM

Yes on the charcoal canister. It's for emissions. It stores fuel vapor that is relieved from the gas tank and feeds it to your motor while idling on the next start up. Venting it to atmosphere makes your car smell of fuel all the time, and routing directly to the manifold may richen the tune a little.

i see. Thats what i thought. So i can just pull it, right? The two vacuum lines go into a little box next to the ignitor. What should i do with it? Can i unplug it and remove it too?

so what lines should i route back into the intake? The vacuum lines that come out of the canister?

p51hellfire 09-29-2009 12:39 AM

dude search I'm positive it's on here......

magnamx-5 09-29-2009 12:41 AM

dude just plug the shit from the intake or use it to run another boost vac source and you will be fine you are over thinking this man. It is way simple

Rushin 09-29-2009 12:44 AM

i am just wondering what does the little box next to igniter for? Is it a valve or something?

magnamx-5 09-29-2009 12:47 AM

yeah its part of that controll system you can chuck it as well if you like.

Rushin 09-29-2009 12:47 AM

ok, i looked at it one more time and it look like the top line is the one that comes from the tank. Where is the best place to plug that line back into the intake?

How do people usually do it? Put a little filter on the line or route it right into the intake?
