what does an ou-of-spec solid lifter sound like? v.I'm a Down's survivor

I have a weird noise around the intake side on 3# that sounds like HLA noise, but more like tapping with a hammer, almost like a diesel. I listened around with a long socket extension and cannot isolate the noise...which tells me its valvetrain.

Thoughts?

How does a solid lifter malfunction?

Duckie_uk 01-01-2010 02:40 PM

Unless you have ejaculated the shim altogether I'm not entirely sure what could malfunction with a solid lifter. Pop the valve cover off and take a peek. If all looks well then start pressing the lifters to feel for a sticky one.

Edit: damn joe beat me to it!

out-of-spec. Sorry.

railz 01-01-2010 02:49 PM

might be a spun bearing, and its the piston hitting/tapping the head.

Pray to the miata gods its not

It only does it at idle and can only be heard when the hood is up. Don't scare the shit out of me, I do not appreciate it.

curly 01-01-2010 02:53 PM

Only time I've heard that is with low oil, so it's not getting to the HLA's, which obviously you do not have. The other other time I've heard it is with a spun crank bearing, where the oil hole was hitting the damaged part every revolution. That could be heard everywhere fairly noticeably, where as the HLA noise went away with higher rpms, as the pump would spin faster and get oil up there. Check the obvious, then start tearing shit apart.

Joe Perez 01-01-2010 02:56 PM

I'm with the duck-man on this one. Pull the VC and take a look while rotating the engine. Any excessive clearances?

hustler 01-01-2010 02:57 PM

bye bye turbo miata, hello all motor terror.

Going for a beer, I can't deal with this shit. Thanks for the help.

Joe Perez 01-01-2010 03:05 PM

Tell your sister she can pick up her stuff this evening.

Duckie_uk 01-01-2010 03:13 PM

Apart from low comp and mad turbo I'm not familiar with your build. What have you done to the head if anything? I'm thinking possibly a sticky valve.

Edit: even if it is just an out of spec shim you have to ask yourself why it's suddenly out of spec. The Valve seat wearing is about the only thing that I can think of that would change the shim requirements

railz 01-01-2010 04:08 PM

poor guy, didnt drink last night?

hustler 01-01-2010 04:45 PM

The head just got new seals and shimmer by a ro. It's always made this noise but I chose to worry about it this day. I think it's fine and I'm just paranoid.

Ben 01-01-2010 04:54 PM

I have heard the same noise from other 4W heads (similar to a noisy hydraulic lifter in tone and volume, from the center area of the head, hear it at idle). This includes my own head. I head the noise when I bought the car--bought it anyway, and have driven it 7 thousand miles now. Car has fine compression and leak down, so I don't let it bother me.

Savington 01-01-2010 05:07 PM

My BP4W head had the same thing. Really light, only at idle.

Duckie_uk 01-01-2010 05:31 PM

Sounding more and more like it's idiopathic

hustler 01-01-2010 06:25 PM

It's way to fast t have a long rod. ;)

If you weren't such a phenomenal technical resoursce I would e-thug you into submission. You've been warned...

NA6C-Guy 01-01-2010 06:57 PM

Probably sounds a lot like your non stop bitching and complaining. Go n/a or shut your trap!

Thank your lucky fucking dwarf star that I'm on an iPhone and drunk enough that I don't have the dexterity to type out a longwinded description Oh duck it.

As the new owner of said head, I can tell you that there was one lifter with about 0.020" clearance. So tick tick tick.....

Savington 01-01-2010 07:26 PM

Interesting. I had plans to go through that head like I am about to go through my '02 head. Gordon, which lifter was it?

Trey, did John do new valves in that motor? That '99 head had about 100k on it when the piston vomited all over it.

flier129 01-01-2010 07:28 PM

My BP4W head made the same noise, all shims were in spec, I wouldn't worry.

But if you want to worry, theres also the Rotrex. You don't have to go n/a! Jimmy from fujiracing is dropping the BP motor and doing a ITB 13b swap. So he's selling his ITB parts.

No new parts , it had 30k on it. I'll put feelers on it this weekend.

hustler 01-01-2010 08:30 PM

Its not making the noise anymore....I guess it was just a cold motor, lol.

18psi 01-01-2010 08:43 PM

I didn't note the cylinder at the time. As I was tearing it down I saw some unusual daylight under one cam. I stuck something in the gap that was about 20 thou, mumbled wow and moved on.

Now, that'd be a first.

Does it do it cold only? Then it's piston slap maybe.

DontPassTheFence 01-02-2010 05:07 AM

aww hustler, poooor hustler he got a bit scared. Man up, play with your dick, and its fine. My doofy 4W engine has sounded like that since new, fucking loud ass valvetrain D:

Itll be fine, if you are really feeling worried about it, just go jam your dick in the oil fill hole. So warm, mmmmmm

Possibly, its very faint too, but probably eating the motor...another reason why cold weather felches my anus.

hustler 01-02-2010 08:34 AM

sounds a little like this:

flier129 01-02-2010 09:00 AM

My engine made the exact noise before it gave out! The built one! :giggle:

Hustler, seeing colder temps in Texas finally?

I thought miata valvetrains were noisey until I heard a e30's on a cold morning. I thought something was going to come thru the hood.
