What extra gauge should i run?

Well, the time to put my turbo kit in is nearing, i am making sure that all my ducks are in a row before i roll down to the base autoshop and rent a lift. Anyways, I have the double, super ricey a pillar mount and I need a gauge to fill up the top one, the bottom one is a boost gauge. So i was thinking a pyrometer, or maybe a coolant gauge. Since the stock one is in the same place from 165-190 according to the ms, i would assume it is fairly inaccurate, or i could do an additional oil pressure gauge, since the factory one is junk. What do you think?

Turbo_4 02-21-2010 11:02 PM

Wideband?

PhantomRoadster 02-21-2010 11:03 PM

wideband 02

chicksdigmiatas 02-21-2010 11:19 PM

Oh, sorry i have the digital read out already (maybe i should have mentioned that lol).

Savington 02-21-2010 11:21 PM

Move your wideband up to it. Wideband is the most important gauge you can have IMO, even more important than boost.

Its mounted infront of where the check engine light and stuff go on the main cluster. It's the square digital read out, it wouldn't work there. But, if you think i should run a gauge in addition to that, then I guess I will, even though I don't see the purpose of 2.

dustinb 02-21-2010 11:47 PM

Volt meter. It'll tell you if you've lost the water pump belt.

Nah, no reason to run 2.

In that case I'd say a PROPER water temp gauge. Like the track guys are running. One that actually shows temps instead of just on/off.

Which AFR gauge are you using?

johnmatt 02-22-2010 10:09 AM

Water or oil temp

hustler 02-22-2010 10:10 AM

If its not a track car, then you only need a boost gauge and wideband gauge. The rest is for show...but I guess an EGT would provide valuable info...which I have a Greddy EGT in a box if you want one on the cheap.

Turbo_4 02-22-2010 11:38 AM

EGT, water temp, oil pressure...all of the above?

AutoFreak57 02-22-2010 04:27 PM

I ended up getting a water temp gauge for the third hole in my TDR mount. I have AFR, Boost, and Water temp for a street car

I'm running WBo2, boost, and oil pressure. I'd recomend oil pressure, since it's probably more important than temp... If your temp goes up, it shows signs and you can smell it... You loose your oil, you have a VERY small window to run before you're completely fucked.

slomiata 02-22-2010 09:22 PM

I've found that having an oil TEMP gauge has saved my turbo. It helps me monitor turbo oil temp. I mounted the temp sensor in the return line.

You should already have an oil pressure gauge (even if it is an "idiot" gauge) to tell you if you loose oil pressure. And you will also have an oil warning light...

....That is, UNLESS you COVERED it up with a DIGITAL READ OUT!!!

I'm a fan of "using what you got" before adding more shit to your car...In this case, gauges. Read up about how to mod your stock gauge cluser to get your guages to work more accurately, and add on a gauge you don't have...

Of coarse, you could be like every other ricer and add a 6" TACH with shift light....:giggle:

Just my :2cents:

CHEERS!!!

I can tell you that that is not true... When I first got the car it had a monumental oil leak... Being the noob I was I did not pay attention to it nor did I fix it.

I ran it down to where the dipstick had about 1 or 2mm of oil on it. Never, at any point, did my gauge dip or a warning light come on.

Luckily I have learned since then.

mx5autoxer 02-22-2010 10:21 PM

put a 75 watt light bulb in there for a shift lyte. gay d m tyte

That's because you were only 1 to 1.5 qts low on oil....Let's remember, we're monitoring OIL PRESSURE, not OIL LEVEL.

Oil pressure will not change with that amount, because OIL is still being PUMPED through the pump. Oil pressure will drop when the pump SUCKS air (like during a corner or fast braking when your OIL LEVEL is low)

If the pump sucks air, then the "idiot gauge" will show it, and the "oil light" will flash...

So I guess the lesson is, check your oil...And if you have any oil leaks, save your $$$, fix the leaks, and if you don't have enough cash to buy a COOL gauge after that...put in a clock ;)
