What is the first sign of differntial failure?
just to be curious, i just installed my stock greddy kit yesterday, after some freeway acceleration and one clutch dump, i noticed somtimes my car making a loud sound in the back when i decelerate. Could it be the differential? by the way i have a 1.6 rear end.

I assume you are already saving your pennies for a tor$en? Some have reported here that it went a day, a week, a month, a year before they blew it. Sounds like you had better go easy on it until you have a replacement ready to go in.

i already have my open 1.8 swap, just don't have the time to do the swaping right now. Hopefully my differential will last until i finish school.....

your car won't go forward or backward anymore.

if only everyone was that lucky.... |
Indeed. For a lot of folks, the first sign of differential failure is when the course workers hand you a bag at the end of your lap containing all the pieces of your diff that they picked up off the track.

When the spedo says your moving and your not.
Just do the swap. I bet I can do it in under and hour. |

Both the diffs I've blown have started whining before they finally let go. The first was just on deceleration, then it started doing it all the time. The 2nd one whined all the time, just different pitches of whine under different loads. The 2nd one would also clunk when I made a slow tight lefthand turn (like pulling into a parking spot).
If you're hearing a whine from the diff, it's been my experience that you should start looking for a new one. You might get a few weeks out of it, getting gradually louder, but eventually it lets go. Good luck! Hopefully it's something else. |
