What oil do you use?
During the winter (say Pacific Northwest, cold and wet, some snow), what weight oil do you use?
Any extra steps taken after changing the oil to make sure there is enough in the lines for the first startup? (for turbo obviously) |
|
10w30 year round.
No extra steps taken after a change. |
I run used oil. It's my little part of saving the environment. Used oil lasts longer and is really cheap (if you have the time to stand by the oil drum at the back of the local parts store).

Gotta make sure to cut them up every time to look for metal shavings.
Then just duct tape them back together and screw it back on! |
Props to the OP for playing along with the forum commedians.

However, some actual responses wouldn't go amiss... |
Okay, Serious response. I use whatever is cheap, but name brand. I don't track it, and no autoX in the past couple of years. No boost yet, either.
Since I drive the car about 6 months out of the year, and only put 2500-3000 miles on it, I change it every spring (along with a good filter) and don't worry about it. |
Unless it was getting REALLY cold up there, i'd probably make no changes.
I don't drive my Miata in winter, but i run 10w-30 in it all the time. (I think. Might have gone 10w-40 last change for some reason.) My daily turbo beater gets 20w-50 in summer, i'll probably go to 15w-40 for winter. :P |
Rotella T-6 5W40, thanks to Hustler.
|
During winter I use warming oil, for obvious reasons. KY Jelly warming is my favorite but it's a personal preference.

T6 has good amounts of zinc for camshaft protection, has shown to be durable in high temp/high stress environments, and deals well with fuel saturation. I am now trying it for the first time myself.
I have been running M1 0w30 for the last 4 years and like it a lot. My usage analysis from blackstone shows it holds up well under track conditions. The oil had more than half its life left in it after 420 track miles / 1440 total miles (4 track days) at 8psi. I have no problem recommending M1 0W30. It is a very thin zero at startup, good for those cold rainy NW mornings. Edit: for startup pull the fuse for the injectors and let it crank for a few seconds to distribute the oil. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...1&d=1351035442 |

Honestly do they just think they can put "nice" and "cool" for 15 posts before they start selling shit and people won't notice?
|
I sent it a PM, and it continues. This one will not last long.

Thanks Möbius and to others

Oil
I have tried several.. The synthetics are appealing and I have used them for years.. They did well, but I am pushing a 200K plus 1.6 hard and have decided to go back to an old favorite.. Castrol 20w50 racing.. The enging is quieter an I have total confidence in it.. It may not be technically better, but My engine seems tp like the additional viscosity... An additional benefit is it is a bit cheaper... not much..

Anyone else have Blackstone results?
I did/do run conventional 10-30w Valvoline in my Mazdaspeed6 (Turbocharged DISI), here's a couple Blackstone analysis results from that, first at 3k miles, 2nd at 5k. I've heard good things about the Shell Rotella, and it's supposed to be fairly affordable. I might give that a run in the Miater. |
Rotella T6 in special cars.
Rotella conventional in regular cars. Whatever's on sale in the beater truck. |

I have not bothered with Blackstone reports, although I am interested in starting with my new to me engine I swapped in. For what it's worth the Shell Rotella synthetic from Walmart has treated me well and I run in in all my vehicles and motorcycles.
