What is an overall good seat for my miata?
Hi folks, I have a 1990 miata and I have been looking for seats that are light and semi affordable but most of all have a lower design because the stock seats that are currently in are too high and my head rubs on the hard top.
I am 6 foot and 170 pounds I dont really care if it is reclinable or not. It is not going into a race car so some comfort is desired but I am 17 years old so it does not need to be like my moms mercedes. Any input is very appreciated and i would not like to spend more than than 600 dollars. Thanks Steven |
Lotus Elise seat...if you can find one for less than $600. And then you got to buy or fabricate a bracket.
|
Will the seat be low enough to fit in the miata?
|
you sir need to use the search button, those seats > your life, lol

Elise or Exige seats are amazing. If you can knap up a Probax seat...well then, you are a very lucky person. But, the price is mega $$$$

Do a foamectomy. You won't regret it. Your back might.
|
Do the foam mod for now.
Lean the seat forward, at the bottom of the back of the upper portion of the seat you'll find some hog rings. Undo those and lift the flap that contains the back foam. Remove foam, put flap back in place. If you're really gung-ho, you can take the seat out and remove some foam from the bottom half. |
Ultra-Shield's are nice. My spec seat is bolted on the floor. Feels comfortable to me. I've seen older people with the Rally seats (TDR).
|
Ya I was looking into those ultra shields and think those might be the way to go.

I think the best aluminum race seat I've seen for daily driver/ occasional track duty is the Kirkey 41 series pro street drag. Affordable, the seat cushion they include with the cover is very comfortable and you can actually get in and out of it pretty well.
The lotus seats would be my first choice though. Look good, comfortable and OEM quality which is far better than anything affordable in aftermarket. |
Get a Kirkey or an Ultra Shield

CORBEAU A4. Mine is 100% perfect.
|
OMP HTE. I can do a thousand miles in that seat and still get out of the car like I was in for a couple of minutes. They are extremely comfortable (and I'm 6'3" and 200 pounds). I've gained about 3-4 inches of headroom compared to my heated leather seats but they are expensive at ~$650. They also look badass with the top up but they suck balls with the top down.

How did you mount yours? Are they on sliders? Also, compared to stock height, are they the same, lower, taller? Did you get the hole in the seat bottom for the 5-pt harness?

We have a set of OMP Grips in our rental car. My dad turns 52 next month and he can do 2+ hours straight in that car without complaining of back pain - I don't even think he can do that in his E46 M3. They are a bit pricey, $600-700 IIRC, but you really do get what you pay for with race seats.
|
I've seen s2k seats before from a local guy here in nc, they sat fairly low, and not too pricey if u get em off a honda forum. Also 3m makes a tan leather seat that matches the tan miata interior they are bout 200 a piece, and brackets come with.

Did the foam mod last week. I removed so much, it filled half a trash can. (slight exaggeration, but I can feel the metal bucket now, though. lol)
...but I actually have 2" of clearance now between the hard top and my head. :) |
