try to figure out how to run turbo&megasquirt with stock ECU? (is it possible?)

move to a county where does not require test?

I totally do not have any idea on passing test with turbo.

But I am wondering if I can buy another running car, and replace the ECU with mine, copy a VIN tag, to make a copy car. Just park it home and never drive it, but use it to pass emission test.

Need to specify location and/or what kind of check is required. Each state (and local) government is different so strategies vary widely by location.

I'd imagine if they're just doing a OBD2 check it would be simple to swap injectors and ECU for the test and pass with a substantially modified turbo car. If they're testing actual emissions or doing a visual check then you run into other issues.

In here, they just take a look at VIN, plug OBD2 to see if there is any codes, if it is clear, I am good to go.

however, even they do visual or actual smoke check, a copy car will just pass without problem...... because that is a exactly stock car

it possibly against the law, but even reversing every year is also not that "legal"

For OBD2 plugin...

You can always wire the Wastegate open, swap in the stock injectors, stock ecu & MAF if required. Reset codes, drive around till all your monitors are set. Stay out of boost, pass.

Swap everything else back in

Few have tried to piggy back a megasquirt to a stock ecu, but it seems to be more trouble than just swapping parts once a year.

I just did this. RTS being "return to stock", this:
* RTS Injectors
* RTS ECU
* RTS front O2 sensor (wideband to stock)
* RTS IAT sensor
* Reinstall MAF (I intend to make this part of the permanent intake someday...
* Install open-wastegate bracket

Then, I drove what turned out to be about 45 miles until all but two monitors were Ready (minimum in NYS for '99-'00 cars) and promptly brought it in for inspection.

Being able to use the MS3x is wholly worth the effort and the downtime of the swap.

In upstate NY, we don't do the sniffer test, fwiw. We do connect the car to some megacomputer in the capitol, though.

you are correct, and I also assume that copying a car is illegal in any country.

however, how can we say reversing to stock is fully legal? People drive totally a different car for the test, lol

I can buy a running 97 by $800 from my friend, but I will still try to be legal first.

In Texas you can get an emissions waver, but you're limited to the number of miles per year you can drive.

I have a metal substrate cat, and with a decent tune it passed. It's not going to get foggy rich until it's under load. Most emissions dyno's have it at steady state at some RPM so tune it to be stoich in that region. It just depends on how harsh the inspector is on visual inspection. My car was too low to put on their lift so they just asked if it had a cat.

I passed in Northern VA. But I never have to do emissions again since it's good for two years and by that time I'll be exempt. The only reason I'm keeping the cat is because it'll be too loud otherwise and I'm too old for that ****.

I wonder what market there is for fake OBD ports that send the 'checks passed' codes to the code reader. Illegal to use, probably, illegal to make and sell? Hmm....

Yes illegal on both ends. It is possible and probably not too hard to do. There is computer software out there that simulates outputs to OBDII for training purposes.

edit: just noticed you're in the UK, not sure how it works over there, here EPA would come down on a business selling something like that pretty quickly.

Us uk lot have it relatively easy. Sniffer test only with differing limits by year. Put whatever you like under the bonnet, if it burns clean enough youll pass.

Conduct test at fast idle, with engine warm:
CO 0.20%
HC 200ppm
AFR 14.25 – 15.14

I am not at all jealous of you guys with OBD checks and visual inspections. But you get E85, so its swings and roundabouts.

Its quite simple, as long as the vw engine goes too, and there is the hard part.

@gesso is doing something similar in Cali. Swap a full LT1 engine including all of the cats in the factory locations. Pull into emissions, scan ecu. See firebird. See firebird pass emissions, give firebird smog certs.
