what pistons and connecting rods to recommend......

well i blew my engine last week. burnt a pistons a couple things went wrong that ive corrected now. i had another block from a 95 protege that got for 50 bucks with 70 miles that i just finished transferring over and ready to put in the car to get me around.... as of the old engine i want to go all out. i ordered 949racing connecting rods they seem good quality and the price is nice. im currently looking for pistons anyone recommend any..

wisecos from race engineering. order them tomorrow and you'll have them before the end of the week.

I'm not sure what you guys think , mixing big boost and overbore, it's a bit like the WI - FMIC debate on other foruns. But I have heard that 4 AGE pistons fit straight in, and at 81mm bore it gives just under 1750cc.
In another forum there is a guy building engines in japan and he bores to 81mm and runs20lb boost (from memory) . That guy stated he gets good reliability, Just having to change rings around 50000km, but blames that on raising the rev limit. He also recomends the lowest temp thermostat you can get.
I would like to hear if anyone here uses the 4AGE pistons as I too will be doing a rebuild soon.

Motorworx has a awesome setup that does just that he says that there is still plenty left on the block when he overbores that far. That and his 9K someodd rev limit convinced me that if my motor goes agian i will overbore to that spec and try some new pistons like him. It will most definatley make me more torque. I think he is pretty damn consevative with his tune though looking at his dyno plot on m.net he is only making 330-380 whp on his varius boost setups. But still that is a good chunk more than most of us will hit. For now my almost 1700 cc 1.6 will have to do though.

I went with FM Wisecos and Carillo rods from an online discounter, Calico bearings, and had the stock crank knife edged.

I'm sure the wiseco's are fantastic pistons, but I'm leaning towards JE because I like their CR selection better, and they're only around $50-60/set more expensive. Both come in stock, 10, 20, 30 & 40 over I believe.

I can't wait to finish my turbo setup and build my spare motor... + .040 1.8L, with CAT rods, JE Pistons, and lightened/knife edged crank = bad ass.

I have CAT / probe rods and supertech 8.6:1, 83.5mm pistons going in my 1.8.

I like the idea of supertech pistons too, just haven't heard from enough people who have used them. Once they establish their name a bit I'll probably go that route over JE... my end goal (once the miata is not a DD) is a conservative 350-400 whp.

+1 on the Wiseco / Carillo combination. (Especially with the knife-edged crank...)

I was kinda nervous about that too. However after talking to a few honda and subaru owners with those pistons, I'm not worried.

I might end up selling the rods and pistons because the guy I want to build the motor wants to use his bottom end parts. I don't really want to, but I don't know what I'll be stuck with. He uses honda internals, but everything has come together reliably on many supercharged streetable track cars.

Go with a custom JE, I'll design em for you ;) It's pretty slow right now so order soon before we get into the busy season.
