What's a dry longblock weigh?

Can two guys pick it up?

patsmx5 09-04-2008 06:21 PM

Depends. I can pick up most Briggs & Stratton longblocks by myself. But A GM 471 longblock, nope.

I will assume you are asking about a 1.8L miata longblock? They aren't light. A friend and I picked one up and put it on an engine stand. Wasn't easy, but it's doable if you aren't a scronny weak bitch.

quadmasta 09-04-2008 06:22 PM

I could always pull the manifolds and the head. That'd save about 50#, right?

patsmx5 09-04-2008 06:24 PM

A longblock does not have manifolds on it.

quadmasta 09-04-2008 06:26 PM

What's the head weigh? 10 or so? I don't think the pickup I'm borrowing has room for the engine, stand and folding crane so I'm seeing if me and someone else can pick it up.

KPLAFIN 09-04-2008 06:31 PM

To throw it on the bed of a truck you shouldn't have a problem...only a 3-4 foot lift and drop it...

Braineack 09-04-2008 06:33 PM

125

quadmasta 09-04-2008 06:34 PM

Not worried at all then :) Thanks Brain

paul 09-04-2008 06:44 PM

the 1.8 long block weighs in at around 225lbs

patsmx5 09-04-2008 06:55 PM

Yeah the longblock weighs a lot closer to 225 than 125. It's at least 200. It is an iron block.

quadmasta 09-04-2008 07:04 PM

I figure the block weighs a little less than the B2200 motor, crank's probably about the same. I had almost no problem picking up the bare block by myself so I'll be cool with a helper. It's not so much that it's heavy, just awkward as hell.

RotorNutFD3S 09-04-2008 07:06 PM

I've seen someone lift the short block by himself, and he wasn't that big of a guy.
A friend and I picked up my whole motor which had the manifolds and the turbo still attached.

patsmx5 09-04-2008 07:12 PM

Yeah, I've picked up a longblock 302 Ford and put it on the tailgate of my truck. I did it. It's doable. But it was one of the stupidest things I've ever done. My back hurt like hell for 3 days afterward.

Next time someone in the tristate pulls their motor, I wanna stop by and try to lift it. Should make for a great youtube.

Artie, Paul? Any idea when ur pulling?

How much does the trans weigh?

Bryce 09-04-2008 08:07 PM

Tranny weighs about 80

y8s 09-04-2008 08:35 PM

if my gf and i can lift the shortblock, two guys can lift the whole thing.

paul 09-04-2008 08:36 PM

truth. One can easily list the trans alone.

Mine should be out by Saturday or Sunday. It's only a 1.6L but my new 2000 long block should be in by Wednesday if you want to try and lift that...

An old fart can lift it into a Miata. Two guys can lift it into a pickup.
