wheel bearings
I need to do the front wheel bearings...one is screaming on occasion when I turn.
Why is it so hard to find a bearing without the hub? Is there any reason why I can't swap the bearings in and out with a press? thanks |
I thought you couldn't replace the bearings on miata hubs, had to do the whole thing as I was told though i could be wrong. I am guessing slightly...dun dun dun
Yeah, I believe they're already pressed into the hub; made to replaced as a whole unit when they go bad.
its one unit you have to replace the hub and bearings at the same time

Stupid? Well, kinda...kinda not. My access to a press is quite limited and on the other side of town...so I don't mind spending the extra money for a pre-assembled hub/bearing assembly that I can install in my own garage.
Different strokes... |
it's actually pretty easy. find a low mileage wreck. buy the hub carriers with hubs. swap in. dont even need an alignment.
If you have a bad wheel bearing then it doesn't take long to toast the hub as well, the hub is just basically the journal in that relationship. So 99% of the time it's a good idea to replace the hub anyway.
What are some other ways to tell you have a bad wheel bearing besides a noise while turning? always wondered.
The hum when turning is usually the first obvious sign of it (before that it might be a "whoosh" that you assume is just normal road noise). When they get worse they will hum when you're going straight and get louder when turning/veering.
Aside from that, you can jack the car up, grab the wheel and see if you can shake it around. But I'm not sure how you would know to do this before the hum starts. Any shaking that you can feel while driving is almost always a wheel balance problem rather than the bearing or an alignment issue. |

do the "hubs" with bearings in them come pre-packed typically? I have to do this in a hotel parking lot, so I want to be sure I have everything before I get started.
I believe so hence they sell together ;)
i think the for the rears.you can buy just the bearing...??is that true.
yes the rears can be had for just the bearing they are 80$ apeice i believe but i could be wrong. Alot of times if they are seized to bad they will bend when pressing out the old bearings making new ones neccesarry.
