Who is using race buckets in a DD car?
Who here is/was using race buckets in their daily driver? What seats are you using? Without a quick release wheel how big a PITA is/was it?
I swap a crappy Sparco Sprint in and out of the car for track days. It's a real PITA to get in and out of with the HT on and also not a particularly comfortable seat. I really like the planted feel and lower driving position though. A quality race bucket can be comfy, just tough to get in and out for an old fatboy like me. Any recomendations on true race seats that are easier to get in and out of than others? Any "tuner" fixed back seats that perform great? In my research it looks like the old sparco Roadster is pretty cool as a tuner seat but is questionable on bolstering for the track. I'd really rather go true race. If someone knows of a race seat that has lower sides please chime in! |
i have a set of evo 8 recaro sets in my 99 miata easy to get in and out work great with harnesses and look amazing

i have a M2 Hard Core roll bar and they sit just below the top bar ill have pics with evo seat in driver side and stock seat in passenger side ill also measure the difference.
|
The evo recaro's are reclinable street seats. They have harness holes though but are fairly low bolsters vs true race seats. Very nice! Not the same as fixed buckets though.

|
I run Momo Start bucket seat for my DD Miata. It's kinda pain to get in and out, but you will get used to it.

How's helmet clearance on those Sparcos?
--Alex |
i got them off a friend who i know from work he strips cars that we buy and then sells the parts and keeps some of the money i work for TheShopCT.com but at them moment i have quit do to not having a car to get there with and no one to drive me.
|
I've had an ultrashield rally sport size 17 for years and years. Mounted to the stock rails.
|
i have sprints bolted to the floor. I'm holding out for a set of exige seats.
|
nice if any one is looking for a set of fixed seats that have a carbon fiber backing there a 1000 bucks if i remember. good for the person looking for an ultralight seat for the ultralight flyin machine

--Alex They fit me great, im low under the roll bar and perfect height for the harnesses to slip right into the seats. I love them. |
Exige seats are nice but spendy. Lot's of the Lotus guys upgrade seats so I'm not sure how good they are for track work. The Lotus guys are liking Tillett. If you've got a narrow butt check out Cobra 7 racing seats. (not the roadsters)
I'm picking up a pair of Sparco Pro 2000's tomorrow. Cheap enough and in good enough shape to use as trade bait if I hate them. Quality seats with brackets and harnesses from a ricer selling them cheap. Love buying REAL race stuff from ricers for 70% off. If these are too big a pain to get in and out of I'll look to sell these and maybe get the Sparco Roadsters, Chrono sports or similar. http://www.ogracing.com/images/produ...-2000-SEAT.jpg |
looks just like the set at work for a 1000 bucks
|
The Pro 2000s are a good looking upper mid range race seat. Speedware sells them for $750 each. The guy has some kind of brackets he used in his Acura with them along with harnesses. I'll see if I can make the brackets work. The harnesses look like they might be ricer crap but I've already got a real one for me, just need another for the passenger seat.
Every review I've looked at say they are very comfy. Great for edurance racing or long distance travel. The big question mark is whether I can get in and out of them on a DD car. If not I'll have to look at something less hard core. |
Color me freaking ecstatic. What I thought were cheesy ricer belts are pretty spendy Impact Racing camlock harnesses. $225 each set at summit. I figured the lightning bolt logo they use had to be some hokey POS ricey junk. Nope. Legitimate race stuff.
Damn this deal is getting too good to be true. Something is going to happen. I'm not this lucky. |
nice deal i would jump on that i need harnesses for my seats
|
Momo Start on sliders. One of the best things I've done to the car to date IMO. You can't just buy something that looks good, you've got to sit in the seats you are considering and find one that works with your anatomy. Once you've found the right one, you'll wonder how you ever drove the miata with a stock seat. This thing plugs me into the car - totally connected, plus it fixed my issue with my lower back hurting on long drives due to terrible back support that most factory seats suffer from.

i love the look of a gutted miata. stop tempting me lol

Hey 1990; I'd appreciate a pic of those seats in your car. Thanks |

That's exactly why I'm looking at doing this. The crappy Sparco Sprint I have is not all that comfy but it sure as hell improves the driving experience. You feel part of the car as opposed to perched in it. It's lower, more solid and gives you more feedback. Not harshness really but you feel more connected. That's why anyone would be willing to put up with the difficulty of entry and exit with these things! |
so wheres the pics of the evo seats? id love to see how they look.
|
a friend is going to take pics for me of the one seat that i have in i was unable to go down to my step dad gas station to finish them up and make the tutorial. but once i go down ill have it but ill have a few pics later today

i get the here you guys go
|
here is one more
|
wow, nice OEM look
|
I wish there were shops around that let me sit in some seats... I am a bigger guy too but I would love to have a nice, comfortable, functional bucket.
|
Guy near me is selling an older momo supercup for around $200, I've thought about picking it up.
But it's.. red. My car is red, but still. |
Nice job 1990!
Thanks for the pics :bigtu: If I can follow your path; I'll try to see if I can mount them a little lower without losing the rails. Now I only have to convince local Evo VIII owners they need racing seats :giggle: |
it will take alot to get them to mount lower for they will hit inside of the tranny tunnel.

i like the evo seat idea...altho personally i think the evo 9 seats were more comfortable then the 8's and i think theres more support on them too...
i know the evo x seats are rediculous with supports lol |
The Evo 9s also have all black seats. They don't have that blue insert down the middle. Better looking in my book. Either way they are very nice seats. OEM look, comfy, suportive. Recaro makes very good stuff.
Just got back from buying the Sparco seats. Just about perfect shape. One 1/4" cut on the passenger shoulder bolster. No fading, they are blacker in person than what the camera phone shows. Clean too. Smell a little of curry though. Guys name was Ali. Seriously. They smell slightly of curry. It's not a racial joke. Non smoker though so that's a big plus. Pro2000 seats new $750 each. Impact 5 pt camlock harnesses new $225 each. Speedware mounts $135 each (Acura, not Miata. Gotta make my own and sell these) Sparco sliders $59 each. Total package new $2290. Couple years old in perfect shape? $500 for the whole kit and kaboodle. Solid deal on good quality seats. I'm happy now. Just gotta figure out mounts and see if I can get my old butt in and out of them. http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x...0429091643.jpg |

I'd look for some Sparco Roadsters or the Sparco Chrono before doing the Lotus stuff. It's extremely nice quality and sexy as hell but most of the Lotus guys I see at the track have gone aftermarket on the seats too.
http://www.sparcousa.com/productImages/199.jpg http://www.sparcousa.com/productImages/646.jpg If I don't like getting in and out of these Pro2000s I'll likely look for either of those. |

Cueball, those pro 2000's look real similar to my momo start, and I usually take my wheel off to get in/out of the car. I can do it without, but its much more clumsy. Keep in mind that's with a 350mm momo wheel as well. If I remember correctly you have a stock wheel which is about 600ishmm.
|
Don't know why I'm even looking at seats...theres about a thousand other things I would buy right now besides seats, but these look like they would be good as well....
Memory Fab R98 Memoryfab - Universal Auto Accessories Parts : R98 Reclinable Composite Seat http://www.memoryfab.com/products/ac...glarge_4_1.jpg Sparco Chrono Road (The ones Cueball1 posted above are the sports and won't fit fat asses) Sparco USA http://www.sparcousa.com/productImages/645.jpg |
If you are willing to put up with ugly the aluminum seat builders build in widths. The Rally and Drag seats from Kirkey or Ultrashield are popular. Also the Sparco Evo series comes in wider sizes. All are true race seats, not "tuner".
|
I got those Sprint V's and although I have another car I dd, getting in and out is not a problem. So I suggest the gym...
The 6-pnt is a real time consumer though... https://www.miataturbo.net/forum/att...8-dsc_9401.jpg |

Sprints here, too. Getting in and out is definitely more difficult with the top up, but no problem plopping down into it with the top down.

i dont see how u guys could ride with those solid seats i think my back would hurt after a while .
|
GT -RS is another great alternative I forgot about. Considered a "tuner" seat as it's not FIA but it is a solid bucket that's cut more like a recliner. Much easier to get in and out of.
Another alternative is the Momo N-51. Hard to find any info on this though. Momo is closing them out for $375. Tuner solid bucket. Easy to get in and out of. Has the ever popular "alcantra" stuff on it. http://www.diseno-art.com/images_3/MOMO_N-51.jpg |

I doubt it has the 5th hole. It's part of the "tuner" collection. If it's a fiberglass bucket pretty easy to cut your own. Hard to find specific info on it. I don't think it's in the current catalog but there are a lot of sellers that still have them. Momo's website sucks hairy round ones.
Quick google search produced prices as cheap as $259 each. |
Correct no 5th Hole. When I go legit FIA, I will probably go with a Kirkey b/c I'm cheap.
I actually find my seat more comfortable than the stock. I sit pretty upright and the seat is ultra low, I slide it back a couple inches for street use and forward for track. |
Is it a fiberglass bucket or metal frame on that seat?
|
Metal
Are the Kirkey Intermediate 20* seats FIA or approved for use in SCCA? |
