Who wants a Full Carbon Dash?
Ok fellas I will not drop the names as of yet, I just want to see how many NA miata owners would like a real carbon dash for their miata. Non of that ViS or other makes that make carbon wrapped fiberglass parts, this thing is real deal, multiple layers or carbon fiber inside and out. It can be sealed for smooth, yet dry carbon look, or clearcoated for shine.
Right now they made a s13 dash which I held with 3 fingers, the whole thing weighted 5lbs. Dont matter what I will be getting one and then will post pictures for all of you to see, the price is not final yet, but im assuming the more interest there is the more they can make (knowing there is market for it) at affordable price to you. So whos interested? |
this should be affordable.
|
I held my stock dash with one finger.
It's not the skin but the metal structure, wiring harness, and hvac hardware that weigh a lot. |
Probably not too much of a demand. My gutted dash from a 90-93 only weighs about 4-5lbs without the frame. The weight is all in the metal tube frame under it.
edit: beat me to it |
maybe thats why they crack lol.
|
I'm sure it would be popular with the club roadster crowd but I don't think I could justify the cost personally
|
i might be in if they can make me one without air vents and perhaps a radio surround without air vents/hvac holes. can they do stuff to my specs (id like to re-position my 7" touch screen which resides in radio surround to a different angle/location)? any idea on price? any way to make it absorb light instead of reflecting it or would i have to paint it?

HAHA, I guess. Not sure how many people are coding on the track.
I think it would be easier to just rip out the stock dash and make your own from flat carbon panels. |

yeah yeah yeah... but wouldnt it be cool to build all the sensors/gauges to be EXACTLY where you want them? plus it would be great to custom mount for arduino in there with easy access (for those quick c++ bug fixes when shit goes wrong at the track)
|
I just got him to buy one over the weekend. I personally have been developing a "to-be" OS WI monitor/controller. Troubleshooting flow meter input atm. Hush hush right now until I have a working example.
|
ill be building an idle stabilization for my gsxr itb kit that has stepper motor for secondary (idle) butterflies. it will be based on rpm input through this sucker and gm map sensor. as an added bonus, ill build a led array for rpm display (like this one but only if that frequency to voltage converter has enough resolution) and a 10hz gps/accelerometer datalogger.

Sounding even more expensive every time you post.

Thats one of the reasons he wants to start making dashes and other stuff, that no one else makes, "get the name out there" so to say. I assure you the price will be fair. |
why not make body panels? or hard tops?
The main reason why CF hoods dont seem to sell well in the miata world is because the stock one is aluminum, and when you remove the under bracing its extremely light. |
Ok just got the word, price will be $800-1200 depending on the dash.
I can get pictures tomorrow. |

If theres marked for hard tops, i can use my HT as a model for him to make CF one. We just dropped off GTR 33 shell (time attack project) for him to make the whole shell out of kevlar. including doors, hood, trunk, bumpers, roof....everything. |
Wow, entirely too much for a dash. That's such a worthless "upgrade" when there is nearly no weight savings or performance gain. I could buy a sick 2871 with a tial housing from atp for that much.

Instead of a generic hard top, I would rather have one that is more aerodynamically efficient. Did I mention it should fit?

I want a hardtop with a big scoop so I can get ram air induction in my face
|
There's definitly a market for cf parts, but there is also definitly a price point that needs to be hit, well that is you want to make money and sell some parts....show us some stuff and I'm sure you'll find what the market is calling for....

Full tilt a hole could just be cut into a reg. hard top, somebody has done that already if my memory is correct. However even with the hard top our cars aren't very aerodynamic. Someone on M.net made a hard top that turned the miata into a hatchback. It had a long sloped rear glass and removed the trunk lid. However it fit like shit, but it looked cool.

The fast back is a cool idea but like you said, it could have been executed better.
The Spoon fastback for the s2000 is an example of how good it can be when its done right http://wiredonhonda.com/photos/redli...nemay09037.jpg |

this buddy of yours should make fiberglass fast back tops. Doubt many people would pay for the CF, but FG could be awesome and relatively cheap.

The third pic is the Jap. coupe, all others are hard tops. The last picture shows what I would love to have, but with it fitting properly and removable.

Project Newb I thought you were talking about the last pic, didn't see there were many more before it. I should expect nothing but disappointment from you though, considering you started a thread trying to market carbon fiber dashes.

i would be interested in full carbon fiber body later though (half a year from now?) :)
The only problem I see is your in West coast, so you would have to ship your car cross country...or drive it :D |
it looks just like any other miata. im sure you can make a mold out of another miata thats close to you
|
Let me know when your ready.
