wierd noise from my car (3 youtube vids)

so today all i did was bump the timing up to 9 and change spark plugs to NGK V power and when i took out for a drive there was a wierd whistle sound every time my turbo was spooling. i hope its not the turbo (BASE GREDDY KIT). i dont have bipes but when i took it out for a drive (with timing of 9 and ignored the whistle) the car didnt knock at all. i was happy about that. but pissed about the whistle sound

VID#1: "the whistle"

Vid #2: "the set up"

Vid #3: "this is the way it sounded before" at 4 psi now its at 6

Could it possibly be your turbo working harder and spinning faster?

And what is that very interesting and may I add extremely distracting blinking light in your tachometer?

edit: Oh and youre out of gas.

I believe that is his air bag light, and i also believe his gas gauge is broke lol

I didn't hear anything unusual. You will notice a whistle above a certain pressure... mine started when I passed 6 psi and went to 8psi. Something else to check before you freak out about your turbo (like I did) is to check all of your turbo to manifold bolts and your downpipe to turbo bolts. A few of the nuts had backed off on my turbo inlet and caused a nasty sound like metal on metal in the turbo.

Mine made a whistle like that when I had a boost leak. Go over all of your clamps. But it could just be what Arkmage said.

urgaynknowit 03-16-2008 01:04 PM

are you still on stock exhaust?
did you check all the bolts, and for any leaks
if the turbo had to spin faster to get that 6psi,
it might make an odd sound
we had my buddies wrx make a whistle like that ,
it was a combo of boost leak and exhaust leak

mike_671 03-16-2008 05:16 PM

no it wasnt making that sound at 6 psi earlier that day,.... but ima check all the bolts on the turbo to the mani ... thanks guys

id say a leak as well, could be possible. check them all, put you hands close around the clamps to see if you have air coming out, but seriously stick your ear closer to pinpoint where that sound is coming from.

Use the ear and hose trick works great for exhaust leaks

urgaynknowit 03-16-2008 08:12 PM

hey mike, do u have the stock exhaust still on there?

lwindridge 03-17-2008 05:22 AM

I'd double check your BOV isn't leaking.
I'm not hearing it hardly at all on the 6psi vid like on the lower boost one and although you will hear more "spool" at higher boost it sounds more like boost escaping to me a little tiny amount (so not enough to throw things off, but enough to make a noise).
Remember a small leak (1/8th inch or so) will sound rather loud when you're boosting harder.

mike_671 03-17-2008 07:35 AM

yea i kinds fixed it... i extra tightened all clamps and mani bolts and it went away but i kinda hear the whistle a little at high rpm so ill have to tighten the clamps all the way since the bolts are full tightened all ready
