In my area it seems like the Miata is the new Civic. They're getting stolen everywhere. 3 disappeared in a week, and one of my friends had his stolen. They took all the aftermarket parts off, put in stock Miata parts and parked it somewhere. Whoever is doing it is targeting Miatas and somewhat knows what they're doing.

Lately I've been thinking of ways to somehow disable the car.

Theft deterence is about convenience. If you can make it a pain in the ***, they'll move on to the next victim. In one of my old VW's with tons of car stereo stuff, an in-car siren helped saved me twice....well, I believe it did. They broke the window but took nothing.

Battery cut off in the trunk. lock the center. maybe an alarm hooked up to the battery itself so that when the rest of the car has no power the alarm still does.

Removable steering wheel? How effective a deterrent are those, anyway? I've heard a lot of "stories" of thieves just bringing a vice grip (or such) to drive off with. I could maybe see that on a car with PS and 185s..

So are 225s and a depower a theft deterrence measure now? Hmm. I should ask my insurance company for a discount.

I have a fuel pump kill switch in a secret location. But... if they are actually pro's they will drive up with a wrecker or roll-back and have it carted up within a minute, then you are hosed, and there isn't much that can stop it.

I've got friends with Civic's that have done this. Simple and effective, at least in preventing them from getting it out of their under it's own power.

Get something like Lojack, park in a well lit area where there are as many people around as possible, make it a PITA to steal your car, get a loud car alarm and check to see if your insurance policy covers after market goodies if the car/parts are stolen.
