Worthwhile interior changes
What would you guys suggest changing out to make the interior feel nicer?
I was thinking of changing the shift knob and steering wheel. I think that would be enough. Just to make it not feel so 90's stock. What things have you changed that felt the most worthwhile? |
For those with long legs this will not work, but I switched out my stock (ugly) steering wheel for a 88 RX7 steering wheel. Looks much better, but it's about .5" larger diameter so it kinda gets in the way for a couple weeks until your hands learn where to grab again.
Other than that, timallen's car at CR.net is about the nicest interior i've been in. Lots and lots of money (that could have been put into the motor) in custom Nakamae interior pieces... |
bolt a seat to the floor.

change the shift knob and steering wheel is nice..for me i like guages ..but i already did the shift knob steering wheel...makes the car feel good when your inside

I see that you have a 93. I would try to sit in a 94 and 95 and look at the door panels and see if you like them better. They do not have a full armrest on them, so you get a bit more interior room. It's a personal preference and I did notice the difference when I was looking to buy my first Miata, but I'm not sure if it's worth the hassle to do a "swap".

How do you like the Voodoo knob? I have heard good things about it. I am looking for a metal one, and the Voodoo seems to be the best.
|
Kung fu Jesus' interior is pretty clean i really like the seats bolted to his floor.
|
is shaving the foam the best way to lower a seat? and yeah get a different shifknob at least, it will make a huge change
|
for youse guys who bolt seats to floor, do you find your elbow wangs the center console when you hit even numbered gears? I have monkey arms and I have to put my elbow in the passenger seat to shift.
|
I was too much of a puss to bolt mine to the floor and bought brackets when I got my corbeau seats, definitely grips me better but I don't really sit much lower. The length isn't really the issue because I like sitting up close to my pedals, but my knees in the steering wheel sometimes pisses me off...

Did a Momo Wheel and Voodoo knob as well, along with some extra instumentation and an in-dash DVD player from my old car. Don't really use it too much, but it was a gift from a good friend, so why not keep using it?
And a Voodoo knob is definitely the way to go in a Miata. |
Why would you bolt them to the floor? To gain clearance? I'm not very tall, I think if I were to bolt one to the floor I wouldn't see over the steering wheel.

I put in Corbeau Clubman's, a Momo Anatomico (short) shift knob, and a Tekniq Auto steering wheel and snap-off system. The steering wheel and snap-off was driven by the Corbeau's, with the stock steering wheel it was almost impossible to get into the driver's seat. The smaller diameter steering wheel facilitated entry much easier and I really didn't need the snap-off, but it adds that extra measure of security. The shift knob was driven by the fact I like Momo products, my old Civic had a Momo knob and it was weighted nicely. The Anatomico fits in wheel with the interior, fits my palm well, and is nicely weighted.
I want to get pedals too, the stockers are a wee bit teeny imo. I;'m not sure if I listed my Car Domain site here... it's got pics. edit: Here... http://www.cardomain.com/id/firedog25 |
I just ditched my C package leather seats and installed some stock cloth ones. Cut the foam about 1 1/2 inches - damn easy project - just use zip ties instead of hog rings. What a difference! No more sliding around in the seat and much more comfortable.
|
a few things I did, since I'm not skinny:
- slightly smaller diameter wheel, MOMO Champion in my case - seat foam mod, the back foam has been pulled from both seats and the DS seat has some removed from the bottom - I flipped the opening of the ashtray around so the ridge would stop digging into my wrist - removed the armrests and recovered the doorskins All of those make the interior FEEL nicer. I also added: - Artworks/Dewa gauge faces - red vinyl on the dash inserts and the top of the doorskins - aluminum rings on the AC vents etc. |
i'll echo everyone's sentiments:
1. smaller steering wheel. 2. door panels. 3. voodoo knob (i have a magnum for sale) the rest is basically useless. |
Not really, I like the Clubmans, they're nice and snug almost to the point of being uncomfortable. The cushion is removable so you can drop another two or so inches in height. When me and my friends go driving they hold me in place perfectly.
|
What style is your magnum? Does it feel huge compared to the stock one? I might be interested.
|
I love my hurst T handle shifter, and i would love some custom katskins and a Nardi steering wheel.
