would anyone be interested in an aftermarket differential that were worth the money?
I just talked to gary peloquin jokingly about how there is not a good replacement diff that can take power in 1.6 cars.
I told him it probably wouldn't be worth his time since essentially the torsen rear can be swapped in for $700 retail. However he still wanted me to call him next week. So you know, Peloquin makes planetary differentials exclusively for vw. They are a little pricey at arround $750, but he offers a no questions asked lifetime warranty. The competition is quaife who charges $800 for just a diff. Gary Peloquin sells his unit with new bearings ($40 typically) and a bolt kit ($150 from ARP). Are the 1.6l rear ends weak from differential design, or ring and pinion metalurgy? |
i would do it the 1.8 difs have recently gone pretty espensive they mostly cost almost a grand with the driveshaft, halfshafts etc. if i can get it done for less and still have a strong dif. I think the heat cycling of the small oil resevior and inherent metalurgy of the gears are to do with the failures, i have read on solo miata sites where there dif fluids reach in excess of 320 degrees F. An option to change gearing on a FI miata is also nice as the 4.3 while being great on lowwer power levels is pretty short on our cars.

might be worthwhile if he can offer different gear ratios and strength while staying cheaper than a torsen

Does Quaife make a diff for the 1.8 cars? Didn't find it last time I was waundering their website.

no matter what lsd u have in there you'll still have the weak ass ring and pinion. Thats what needs to be changed.

You can still pick up the open 1.8 drive line for cheap. Then watch out for an rx7 clutch lsd. I got the 1.8 driveline for $400 +$80 s/h. Just picked up an rx7 lsd for $100 and will replace the clutch disks. That's on the cheap for a strong lsd IMO. The transmission would be the next upgrade. - rob

i thought he was offering better gears the lsd's can be had via kazaa and varius other sources most 1.6 difs breack ring gears from what i hear i would'nt worry about the lsd.

My point was that it's way cheaper to get an lsd for the 1.8 diff- add that to the fact that the 7" ring and pinion is also stronger and you've got a upgraded limited slip rear for the same price of only an upgraded 6" ring and pinion.

you show me where i can get a 1.8 dif halshfts drive shafts for less than 800 bucks and i will be glad to drop out of this discucsion i dont know if it is the heat or what but they are going for way more this summer it is ridiculous i dont care about the diference in lock up between the 2 that is why i run bigger tires anyway to make sure i get traction mine lays it down pretty even and does well on the road but if i didnt have to worry about breaking the pinion or had a better ratio i would probably enjoy it more.
