Wrote a fairly detailed engine removal tutorial
I found a couple of writeups on engine removal, and the haynes manual of course, but they all glossed over some things, especially wire and vacuum line locations.

wow that must have taken you a lot of time to write up. And i know how annoying picture taking is and how much it slows you down. Props given! :bigtu:
My method is remove stuff, try to pull and see whats still attached, remove those items and repeat until it's free. |

One thing you didn't mention that always helps the first couple times you pull a particular engine is to label every connector you take off. I've never pulled a BP, so idunno if each connector is unique, but there's nothing worse than forgetting where some connector/vacuum line/etc goes and having to experiment. BP's are pretty simple and your guide has tons of pictures for reference, but its always good to have a backup. Same goes for putting bolts/nuts in labeled sandwich bags or similar.
That said, I might be pulling my motor this summer for ease of turbo and coolant reroute installation, so this is definitely getting bookmarked ;). Thanks! |

Engine wise, nothing in the bay is the same. Routing/bolting/securing methods is a different story. Especially if you change anything, special care has to be taken to keep wires away from heat and moving parts, and so that they'll actually reach their intended destination. Ask Ed though, I can identify any plug out of a 1.6 or NB. And 99% of a NA 1.8s. Which, although Mazda made them for one year more than the 1.6s, I surprisingly see very little of them.
