Default New member - Tuning and AZ smog questions

Hi just bought a turbo miata with the following mods :

Miata has the GT2554R turbo, carillo rods, wiseco piston
forged w/ 1mm overbore, turbo timer, dyno Tune-link ecu, tociko
adjustable shocks, short shifter

Its in need of a tune, thanks to the stock cam gears being put back in it.
Im thinking of taking it to Church tuning in Southern california. Anyone have deep experience or know who has experience with Link tuning?

Also need to ask about AZ smog laws. My understanding is they literally will hook it all up to the machines, but visual is minimal - minus a mirror to see if cat is there. Can someone confirm this? Ill be in the Chandler AZ area, so need to likely smog and register it there.

Thanks, AC

You're leaving out all kinds of info. I'll answer both ways I guess. I do drive a miata...

Pre 96 - Sniffer test + mirror for cat and things.
96 and up - Plug in to obd2 check for fault codes. Engine light on dash is automatic fail. Use mirror to check under car as well.

It's pretty simple. you cna modify to hearts desire as long as you can meet standards for pre obd2. obd2 is all about the lights.

It's this right here that makes me wonder if I could rig up a jimstim and a few other inputs, and just route the stock ECU to the OBD2 port to make the state happy...
It's all a question if:

(Amount of work to put back stock injectors/IAT/MAF/ecu) < (Work to figure out how to spoof said ecu)

I've got about a month to decide. :-/

Figure out where you live and see what the requirements are:
ADEQ: Air Quality Division: Vehicle Emissions

Yes, the year of your car is the most important missing piece of info. I will say that I have lived here 7 years, and emissions tested 3 different (OBD2) cars in that time. Never once have they done anything other than plug into the OBD2 port and check the gas cap. No visual or anything. Probably doesn't hurt to be safe about it though...

Hey I'm in AZ too! Although I'm in Scottsdale.

As a 91' they will do a visual and a sniffer test.
