Default Fe3 and handling

I've looked for a weight spec but I didn't find much, only a post of someone reffering the fe3 to be roughly the same weight as a 302.
That said:
how much does an fe3 weigh and how does it's weight compare to a 1.6 and a 1.8 ? How Adversly does this affect handling what kind of front to rear ratios are we looking at?)

Undressed longblocks - the FE3 is ~50lbs heavier at ~330 lbs. Not a positive for handling. Here's a good photo of the size difference:

Solomiata.com has a lot of info on the engine. But otoh most people can't come remotely close to driving their car at its full potential, so increasing a frontal bias by 1-2% would hardly matter.

this is the third time i've said this, but damn it's sexy... i'm thinking long and hard about this swap for better low end power and spool. i'd probably never take it above 240rwhp but i don't think i'd need more, and thats where the complicated transmission **** happens for this engine.
edit: i was just on that sight actually and i couldn't see a weight for it on the spec page.

if we are talking sportage engine, yup custom engine mounts, porting and **** for the cas, custom intake manifold ( you have to take the plenum from one of our cars and weld it to the base of its intake.) a transmission bellhouse froma b2000/b2200 truck swap if you plan on keeping the 5 speed, and it gets a lot more complicated for something stronger... a custom or swapped oil pan. thats all the stuff i remember but its got a better flowing head than at least the original 1.8 (not sure about the 99+) more displacement, stronger, and can be cheaper too.

edit: clutch and flywheel too forgot that one, can use rx7 clutch, flywheel i think you can swap for a 626??

All that work for 240rwhp haha **** that, don't bother for those kinda numbers.

As soon as I can raise the funds I'll be ordering my FE, bet your *** it won't be to make what a stock bp can make though (or b6 for that matter!)

think of the low end!!!!! can't get a stupid v8 anyway as i live in california :( too many ******* complications... hell if a 1.8 fell into my lap i'd do it but this fe3 sings to me. i can get low end fast, and have a top end that doesn't crap all over itself. really, really reliably. it may not seem like it but i'm not trying to throw away money either...

Design wise it is more like the earlier BP/B6 heads... it's of the same era.

I had one in my '90 626. It was fun but to be honest the BP is a bit smoother, especially at high revs. It is built like a brick shithouse though and if you're only going to make 240whp with it then it's not even worth the trouble IMO. some of the people on mx-6.com have made some unreal numbers with this motor.

Its more like the 99-up heads, I cut one a part years ago, not sure what ever happened to the pics though, it might be on my old hard drive on a dead laptop, that I have been meaning to hook up and go through.

I posted up the head flow numbers years ago on miata.net you can search for it, it responded very well porting and had some serious velocity on the bench. Unless you trying to keep every thing Mazda, they're better engines out there with more aftermarket to swap in.

On a side note we calculated if we sleeved the block we could have bored and stroked it to a 2.5L.

Intakes are fwd so your best option is make your own, or at least using the stock flange/runners and adding a plenum.

I know SCCARacer (m.net/Danny) posted flow numbers - his FE3 info here. I just went by what the port shape and angles looked like compared to the BP heads sitting on the bench.

There are better engines out there, but at what cost? The kia FEs are selling cheap in running condition- and as far as aftermarket, what else besides rods and pistons? You can get stock or stroked forgies from venolia, wiseco and JE, domestic- others international. Pauter and Carillo do rods now, and there's going to be a group buy for Eagle forged rods on mx6.com shortly with a targeted price of $350/set.

The only thing I'm really defending is what you get for the money. I've got about $4k in my swap and turbo setup- that includes the $800 I paid for the engine which is way cheaper now. And it's got far more head room in it.

Oh I didn't noticed that you had one in your car. FYI valve springs from Honda B16 are a direct replace if you need upgrade from there.

The DOHC head is the real centerpiece of this motor. It's design is almost identical to the DOHC 'B' heads except for everthing being larger. The ports are much larger than 1.8 and the valves are also larger than the 1.8. The stock FE3 head flows 234 cfm intake and 194 cfm exhaust at 28 inches water (for comparison a 1.6 head is about 170'ish intake and a 1.8 head is about 210'ish intake). The factory redline is 7000 rpm with a 7300 fuel cutoff (same as the Miata).

Both 99-Up heads and FE3 one have high port runners which tend to have greater velocities. I really wish I could find my old cut away FE3 pics. I am pretty sure I sent them to Randy back in 2004-2005, but I don't think he updating anymore then.

Yeah- that cutaway makes the high port obvious.

Oh sexxyyyy!!!! Thanks much m2cups1car and red94. I think that was the last straw that broke the camel's back... I'm aiming for this swap, even if it breaks me, and it probably will.
