Your honest opinion...

I am not a ricer but while searching for a bentley grill for my friends dads chrysler 300, I came across this.
http://www.x3racing.com/products/pro...T-KS-MMX590-BK

I don't think they look to bad. Probably would clean up the ass a bit.

What do you guys think?

I have those, I think they look good on my car, but most other miatas i've seen them on didn't look right. Is your car stock looking?

Take a picture of your ass and post it:giggle: and yes my car is stock looking.

ArtieParty 06-11-2008 03:48 PM

Sam,

I run them on my black 95, Paul has them on both of his red 94's, and Jes has them on her laguna 94... Guess you'll have to come out to more mob events. hehe

and you can get them on ebay for around 90 shipped

Thanks for the new sig material Ben. Beats out my current one.

jobambo 06-11-2008 03:55 PM

I have those. There is ONE thing that i hated about them. Around the trim you can see the WHITE glue. I went to my local hobby store and picked up some tint paint, and tinted them a bit. I think they look great now.

samnavy 06-11-2008 03:58 PM

Darked out lights like that only look good on a moderately dark car.

Black, green, blue... and it just doesn't make it unless you're going for a very specific "look".

On the other hand, I think they look even worse on very lightly colored cars... like white, yellow, etc...

But on a moderately dark car... grey, silver, red, very nice.

When it comes to exterior mods, a lot of people don't ever "think it through" or have a plan. They see something they like in a picture on the internet, or on a store shelf and say "COOL, that looks pretty good." Then they put it on their car... then next week they see something else cool they have to have and put that on. When you get four or five "things" that looked cool in a store on a car with no thought process or "goal", it ends up looking like shit.

Are you going for some sort of specific "look" or are these things that just "look cool".

Those lights with some dark-titanium rims, stock front airdam, low-pro headlights, and a black rollbar... sweet. I'd also paint the brake calipers black. Don't forget a dark license plate frame and flat-black any part of your exposed muffler. I'd stay away from an exhaust-tip with those too... just the blacked pipe sticking out. Chrome IMHO isn't going to match the lights. <<<That's an example of how you think it through. It might not be your cup-o-tea, but my 2cents is that exterior mods need to really be thought out.

hustler 06-11-2008 04:02 PM

I'm just not a fan of altessa style anything.

^tyrant^ 06-11-2008 04:08 PM

On a black or red car i think they would look great...

ArtieParty 06-11-2008 04:10 PM

Sam. Im sure if you ask Paul nice enough, he can take out the lights from his car and swap them into his mom's. He just bought his mom a 97 M so you could have pics of what it would look like on your car.

KMag 06-11-2008 04:13 PM

I have them on my mariner blue 91. I think they look pretty good, but as mentioned by others, but only on a dark color. Another friend of mine has a brilliant black, and he got the clear version of them. We both agreed that the black tail lights would be too much with the black paint.

Saml01 06-11-2008 04:14 PM

^ I wouldnt ask him to do that. Too much work just for a picture.

As for someones question about the look im going for. No specific look. Just want it to look sleeker and cleaner.

I'm actually trying to stay stock looking to not attract attention but its become awfully difficult. The naca duct that should be done this weekend, isnt helping either.

Altezzas belong on Altezzas. Even on those cars originally they look ugly.

As with anything... it's a matter of taste... I just don't like things that taste ugly.

Here ya go. I do want to tint them a bit though. This guy suggested to use clear coat with a touch of my paint for the tinting, I think he may be onto something. or I will just use a touch of black paint with the clear.

chriscar 06-11-2008 04:59 PM

2 thumbs down. My car came with Altezza's and I swapped with someone straightup for stockers.

Saml01 06-11-2008 05:01 PM

Thanks for the pics artie, they look good. But they are slightly different then the ones I posted. Your turn signals are clear, the ones I posted have red turns signals.

Does it come with yellow bulbs for the turn signals or white?

I might have to consider picking up a set, they may look good.

Zabac 06-11-2008 05:16 PM

Spike, that is a one off...got it for $160 and it's SCCA legal...guy here named mxv made it/had it made and sold it to me since he was building a cage.

Sam-mine have the red turn signales, I don't think they come with bulbs, you your own. I did put LED in my brake lights for some brightness, not a big difference, so it was a waste of $3.

Chris :fawk: I thought Altezzas are chrome, these are not chrome.

nightshade the stockers and call it a day

I'll be sure to consult the Ricer's Desk Reference next time. :jerkit:

Good times.

kotomile 06-11-2008 06:17 PM

I've been considering sanding my tails (shaves down the letters) and applying a red vinyl over the whole lamp, then cutting out the reverse whites. I think it'd look pretty clean on a red car.

Those tails are meh to me, I don't like euros at all though.

Zabac 06-11-2008 06:47 PM

I don't know about the vinyl koto, heared about it peeling etc., plus it won't look right if you cut out an area in the middle. have someone paint them for you, it's more permanant, but also looks better.

TonyV 06-11-2008 07:22 PM

"Im not a ricer, but" I do like the look of some aftermarket tails...
I tried something like these on 2 diff cars (350z & Mazda3) and was "eghh" bout both..

I promptly used night shades paint on BOTH, and happy but not completely satisfied...no matter ho wmuch I worked them, I couldnt get them glossy enough to be close to my liking...

I then found some vinyl overlays, and was THRILLED.
Had them on for about 2yrs per car, numerous rains/washes/lots of heat, etc...NO issue.
Just gotta take your time, trim them right, and work the heatgun/squigee right...

So I vote for vinyl...I'll be sanding the letters off and doing this to mine...

--make that 3diff cars...WIFE saw the Z and made me do it to her Black FX and was/is thrilled..

Here's where I get them, good guy, member on 350z forum i used to be on...you may/may not find cheaper...but I'll vouch for him and quality...i tore 1 of mine and he even hooked me with a replacement...
I didnt see anything miata specific, but i'm sure he can do 'em
Thats what the Z looked like with them to give u an idea...

I like that one with the black center piece...

They'd look good on a darker color car if you smoked them.

I've been searching for a dirt cheap set for a long time now to disassemble and build some LED modules for.. Nobody wants to give up a set for dirt. :(

Oh... and wannabe Bentley dodge 300 == teh gay.

johndoe 06-11-2008 08:40 PM

I'm not a fan either but if you want them, open them up and paint the edges to do away with that ugly-goggle looking grey silicone. It would look much better.

not opaque vinyl, mind you, vinyl made for taillights. I have some already so all I need to do is sand.

compuatic 06-11-2008 08:53 PM

i was considering a set for sometime... not as bad as the totally clear ones.

Nightshades and clear coat FTW! Just don't go too dark or you'll have to sand em down and do it again, which is a pain in the ass!

Mine, slightly tinted. im going to sand them down a bit and apply clear when i have a chance.

Jesse H 06-12-2008 05:23 AM

One thing I don't like about tinting the taillights is that they'll no longer reflect light.

airbrush1 06-12-2008 07:15 PM

It's just 800 grit sandpaper to smooth the tails down, then the Nightshades, and then real automotive clearcoat (not out of a can)

I still need to wetsand and buff them out, there's a few specs of dirt in there that bother me.

Vashthestampede 06-12-2008 07:27 PM

I think I'm gonna finally do mine tonight. I have a can of the nightshades and the clear. You just did one hit of 800 grit?

Vash-

airbrush1 06-12-2008 09:09 PM

well I sanded down the letters first, actually I scraped them off with a razor blade and then sanded it smooth, then degreaser. Make sure everything is dry and clean and spray the nightshades in light even coats. LET IT DRY OVERNIGHT, or it will probably fisheye when you clear coat them ( not sure why, but this shit takes forever to cure)

If you get a bunch of dirt or dust in the nightshades you can lightly and evenly sand it back out with 600 or 800 grit paper and re-coat.

Saml01 06-12-2008 09:41 PM

Post pictures of the process guys.

Vashthestampede 06-12-2008 10:17 PM

I'll take pics and do a step by step as I do them tonight, see what I come out with.

I sanded the raised numbers and lettering off years ago to clean them up, but never got around to tinting them. I think it'll play off my black and blue theme nicely.

miatamania 06-12-2008 10:43 PM

ahhhh, this might be it then...I used spraycan clear coat (couple coats actually) and I did several coats of nightshades...also sanding in between coats

They came smooth as hell, but I couldnt get a decent gloss for the life of me...

SO I'm assuming to do this properly you'd need a paint gun...?

cjernigan 06-12-2008 10:59 PM

It's tough to keep a wet edge with a spray can. You probably laid the clear down too dry.

airbrush1 06-12-2008 11:23 PM

you may be able to buff the canned clearcoat up and make it shiny, some of the higher quality trim clears will buff up nicely. It's worth a try!

To really do it right you need a paint gun, but I've done it with the expensive canned stuff and it worked ok too after some buffing

Someone recommended Testor's hobby paint to me for this. Don't get it. It all flaked off as my car sat outside during the winter. Where's the cheapest place to order Niteshades?

kotomile 06-14-2008 03:10 PM

Just got done sanding my tails down, no more letters for me!

Did 800, then 1000, then 1500. Still dull though, so it's time for some plastic polish.

EDIT - rubbing compound, then plastic polish, then cleaner wax, and the tails are glossier than new!

Ya think the polishing compound then plastic polish would work for dull headlights?

kotomile 06-15-2008 10:07 PM

most likely. I've polished plastic-lensed headlights to like new before, but I started with 800 and worked my way up just like with my tails.

johndoe 06-15-2008 10:12 PM

If you're going to do it, go this route. It looks a lot more subtle too me.
