Your take on buying used clutches

Simple question:

Is it stupid idea or perfectly fine to do?

patsmx5 10-21-2008 11:20 PM

Stupid. But I did it and so do others. Kinda wish I'd just bought a new one though. If they aren't broken in properly they won't have as much grip and won't wear as well. Only reason I bought this one used is cause it's the strongest ACT there is, and it will be way more clutch then I need, so I shouldn't have a problem. You can have the flywheel resurfaced or scuff up the stocker, scuff up the clutch disk and PP, and break them in again.

Eh, not a great idea (though that didn't stop me).

Just buy a new one.

AlexO35 10-22-2008 02:51 AM

+1 buy new....
+1 I didn't either....

I see it like buying brake pads...or any other wear item, I would never do it.

Machismo 10-22-2008 09:12 AM

For what it is and what it sees, I would always buy "new"......
New is not going to break the bank.
Would you buy used underwear? - Even if it was clean?
How about a toothbrush?
All kidding aside, peace of mind is better than saving a few bucks. ;)

Braineack 10-22-2008 09:23 AM

depends what your getting and the price your getting it for. I ran a used clutch for a while.

akaryrye 10-22-2008 10:57 AM

also you could consider just using the pp if the deal is right and then buying new friction material

Splitime 10-22-2008 11:07 AM

I'm using a used clutch with luck so far.

As mentioned many times above... its a gamble though.

y8s 10-22-2008 11:16 AM

haha what's your opinion of dropping the tranny twice?

m2cupcar 10-22-2008 11:17 AM

If you know it's good and know it will last to your expectations, then what difference does it make? Yeah it's a wear item, but I can't see how it's any different from what a new clutch would be like after the same amount of use. It's like pulling out brake pads that you know what last a 3 hour race, but then putting them back in to use for a 15 lap sprint. If they work, they work.

Stealth97 10-22-2008 11:48 AM

I personally would never do it. It came out of there for a reason.

levnubhin 10-22-2008 12:14 PM

I think it depends on how used it is. How many miles on it? How much power did the vehicle it was in make?

exactly, i wouldn't do it twice for the savings of a used clutch, fuck that

m2cupcar 10-22-2008 12:33 PM

I sold a used clutch that had 2500 miles on it for half what it costs because there was no way in hell it was going to hold the power of a new engine and turbo. Looked like new when it came out and was unabused. IMO that's a deal- hell it's just broken in.

Haha. How many times have you removed the transmission on yours?

hrk 10-22-2008 01:45 PM

I have a used 1.8 flywheel and clutch with unknown mileage, 90,000 on wrecked chassis it came from.
12 pack of decent beer gets it if picked up from zip 30024

hrk :)

Instead of getting a new clutch when I go 1.8...I'll prolly just buy a 6 puck instead of the stock disc that is mated to my ACT XT PP...and have them/a machinist take a look at the PP to make sure nothing looks warped or fucked up.

probably not less than annually. except for the first year or 3. so maybe 5-6? :)

If your time is far less important than money to you? Sure, go ahead. If you put any value on your time forget it. Spend the money on a quality new part and live without the stress of wondering if It's going to work, hold power and last.

Nothing like wasting a full day, bloody knuckles and the money spent just to have to do it all over again with parts you should have bought in the 1st place.
