NA Miata Elite 1000
Hi Guys n Gals
I am building a car for my son and have spent the past week trying to get it to run. Specs Stock 1.6L Haltech Elite 1000 ECU Flow Force LS Coils Garret GTX 2860R Gen II Turbo limiting to 8lb of boost at the moment Sinco Customs Manifold Stock intake Maruha Linear TPS Stock Injectors Haltech Basemap HT-140872 - Mazda MX5 NA 1.6.e1000 NSP Software Now for the questions Google tells me that the firing order is 3214 for a 1.6L Haltech Basemap has the firing order as 1342 I have tried both combinations and I have spark but it does not fire. when I turn the ignition off and then back on I get a cough. NSP Software tells me that I am around 260RPM when turning over. Tacho was working but has now stopped What am I doing wrong? https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...29c7655f0e.jpg |
Hey Scotty,
Can you post some of the settings and logs of it cranking? Also it looks like you're not running a vaccume line to the ECU in the picture? On my NA6 I have firing order: 1342 The Tacho is driven by the ignition coils on NA6, if you're not getting a read out on your dash that could probably mean that the coils are not firing (or you have a separate issue with tacho, there's a thread about it) Because the ignition system is aftermarket, make sure you have entered all the correct setting Going to share what I have on my stock NA6 right now https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...cc176e976e.png Engine configs tab https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...b8e42ce2d0.png Trigger settings tab |
I reset the CPU back to factory to try and fault find some glitches. I set the Engine Config and Trigger as you suggested and still will not fire. I had a tacho until I changed the fuel system values.
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...3e6093dc41.jpg this is the setting that kills the tacho https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...3e81b5487b.jpg Tacho works when I have 2 injector outputs. I would have thought 4 injectors - 4 outputs as that is how I have wired it up. |
I think you're getting mixed up between ignition and injectors.
There are 4 injector ouputs, one to each There are 2 ingition outputs, one for cyl #1, #4 and one for cyl #3 and #2 Because the dash tacho on 1.6 is driven by ignition coils, and changing injectors settings effects the tacho, I would assume that some wiring got crossed Can you verify that your wiring matchese these? Ignition wiring could be different as you can wire up LS coil kit to be in full sequential mode https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...9521815ec1.png Ignition wiring https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...a06c6082f0.png Injector wiring https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...3ccd18fb86.png Injector settings, for stock na6 |
Yes it matches the screen shots that you posted.
When I reset the ECU to base map it has it at 2 injectors. that is the only time that the Tacho works. I have also noticed that the TPS is no longer working. recalibrated it and it is sitting at 100% and flickers to 0% without touching the throttle |
TPS flickering can be fixed with TPS Filter Scale and Derivative Filter. Both of mine are set to 4 because of noisy TPS
But the base map having 2 wires to injectors is very strange, should be 4. Also I noticed that you don't have the "Cylinder and Bank Correction Stages" set. When you select it to "Stage 1", in the "Fuel Tunning > Stage 1" There should be settings for Firiring Angle, dead times and Flow. Another thing to verify that is set Either way, you should be able to start car without the tacho wroking. What are the symtoms that it's giving? Can you verify that the fuel pump primes? Ignition produces a spark? Injectors getting voltage? What happens if you keep the trottle open while cranking? |
I wasn't at the stage of setting the other bits yet.
I pulled a plug and verified that I have spark (at least at number 1) Injectors are seem to be working as I can smell fuel at the exhaust and when I turn the ignition off then back on it detonates. Throttle open when cranking makes no difference. |

OP I assume you ran additional wiring to the injectors to allow for sequential injection? I'm sure the haltech has some form of output test mode. Test your fuel pump output, injector outputs, and ignition outputs. Verify the outputs are triggering the correct cylinders. I'm sure haltech also has a feature for logging cam and crank signals. Make sure they both are coming in and have the expected waveforms. |
I did some checking of the Timing Belt install and found that at TDC the intake cam was installed wrong (Installed at Exhaust keyway not intake)
Thankyou very much to TOAST sending his basemap I have the car running. One concern is that with the Crank gear at TDC the timing mark on the Harmonic Balancer is at the 3 o'clock position and I cannot adjust the CAS enough to get it back to where it should be. |
I still have no Tacho.

With the factory ignition coils, the factory ignitor provides the pulses to the tachometer, the factory ECU provides a +12v pull-up on the same connection. For an OE coil setup the correct settings in a Haltech ECU are 0 pulses and +12v pull-up. I don't know if or how your LS coil setup has changed that but I thought it may be helpful. |
