Hydra 2.7 gauges

Just curious if anyone has hooked up gauges using the can signal from their hydra? I believe it uses a obd2 can signal? I have had a hard time finding info on anyone doing this. I really like the AEM obd gauge. I figured it would be perfect for an af gauge and maybe coolant. I know you can use the AiM displays, but was looking for something more affordable. I looked some more and it looks like some have used the "scan gauge" but that's all I could find. Has anyone used other gauges?

Hydra CAN has nothing to do with obd2. CAN outputs need to be wired directly into the hydra. And it can only output wideband readings in lambda, not afr

Well, at it's most basic level, an OBD2 reader is a device that reads CAN data. That's all a OBD2 plug is; power, ground, can high, and can low. But I would be surprised if you wired all this up and the scanner had the protocol to read a Hydra. It's pretty easy to find out, buy a OBD2 plug and pins, wire it into the hydra, and see if any off the shelf scanners connect.

I know when I used the CAN output a MSpro, I had to tell the AiM dash it was reading a Megasquirt, and it worked.

That's what I thought. Until I found this post: Hydra 2.7 OBDII Port Communication
I also contacted perfect tune looking for a can gauge for a Hydra and was told the output is CAN obd2. So I assumed someone on this forum had done this before with a Hydra. I realize the wires need to be ran from the ecu and you can't read codes or anything like that. I plan on putting a gauge in soon. Just looking for a gunea pig. I'm not sure what you mean by can outputs? I wanted to read can from the ecu. What other can outputs is there? Is 2.6 different in this respect than 2.7?

I did wire up my OBDII port as in that writeup. I used it to connect my RaceCapture to the hydra and read info using CAN. I'm still working to perfect it as it did take some custom mapping to get the "gauge" mapped up with the correct signal. So far I've been happy though.

Per an e-mail from Jeremy c. 2012:

Hydra is also continuing to develop their CAN bus capability. Right now it’ll work with the AIM sports dash & output generic OBD-2 sensor output. (NOT codes for emissions testing.)
As of January 2017, the AiM SoloDL will work with Hydra. It incorporated all the AiM CAN protocol and can show up to 4 streams (CAN plus any additional sensor inputs that Hydra can work with).

Need Hydra 2.7 with the CAN option enabled (it's not baked into earlier units, so you'd need to send it back to the manufacturer to be updated).

Not a cheap gauge, by any means, but it's also a useful laptimer. HTH.

Did you get it to read afr?

this is my setup. Lambda tho

No. According to Jeremy lambda should be possible but I haven't gotten that yet.

Sorry for necroing an older thread. Always better than making a new one :)

I'm also looking for info regarding hooking up real gauges to a Hydra EMS 2.7

I really don't want to run a whole AIM dash and would like to just run a nice neat pillar of 3 gauges and maintain that stock look and feel. Tracking down info on this is damn near impossible

I understand the Hydra can have pretty much any unused pin programmed as a switch for a certain event, but how to we utilise this for an actual gauge? How do we get data out of the Hydra without going full blown AIM? Is OBDII the only way? I mean that's cool as there are a handful of gauges that support this but unfortunately one of the main ones that do is for AFR, which by the looks of it is completely unsupported. Did anyone actually try and succeed in getting an OBDII gauge to read the Hydra data in the end?

The other gauges I'd like to use are Oill Pressure + Temp and Boost. Lastly, if this is possible, is it only digital gauges that would be usable? It'd be great if we could keep an analogue Gauge for at least boost

Thanks!

I have the hydra nemesis ecu and was wondering how I can do the same thing. Wire in a boost and afr gauge. Did u get it done. Maybe a picture?

I am sure there aren't many of us Hydra users left, but yes, it's possible to pull the data off the canbus on the Hydra. I used a $5 canbus adapter and an ESP32 to poll the Hydra for the data, then send it wirelessly to another ESP32 device to display it.

I've also made a script to read all the possible messages from the hydra, in their own protocol.
unfortunatly it only works through polling hydra specific requests. Which then returns them in the same order.
but if a message fails (with fast polling 20 values for example) than you'll be out of sync, because no id's are beiing send as is the case with odb2 for example. Only the data in the same order as it was requested.
though it does work :) and plotted data on my custom gauges. But it's also possible to translate them to other canbus protocols with a unit so you can read it on any can gauge.
I must say though that you can read ALOT of parameters from the hydra in their own protocol ;)
