Hydra Launch Control

Anyone have it set up and working good? I'm going to play around with it later and it would be nice to have an idea of what settings have worked for others. My last attempt ended in failure because it either wouldn't spool the turbo or if it would start to spool, the revs wouldn't hold and it would climb to redline.

I know I'm quite late to this thread, but Jeremy found that the Hydra LC wouldn't hold my Stroker/GT3071R either. We got the same symptoms you found. Since I'm not much of a drag racer, I just had him leave it off.

BTW, I read your build thread. Bravo Zulu!

JayL 06-19-2009 09:57 PM

Yeah, that's what I keep hearing.

This is what Jeremy sent me today for anyone that comes across this thread later, "To enable launch control, you should just have to go to Select -> settings -> ignition and change your Launch RPM Soft to the RPM you want. Then, do what you need to do in the launch Fuel Cut & Spark Cut Cycles to get it to hold at the desired RPM. For turbo car, it's "better" to cut more spark than fuel, however that is also hard on your cat & O2 sensors. Also, you may have to lower your desired RPM to get it where you want it considering how it will creep up under load."

Pretty much straight out of the manual. I was hoping for some actual numbers that have worked on a car with a similar setup that he has already tuned to start with. Oh well. I'm going to keep playing with it and see if I can make any progress. I am quickly getting tired of finding things in the Hydra that are advertised features that don't seem to work at all, work poorly, or can't be used when using other features....

While in an Alternate Reality I am sure that I am as mechanically inclined as Smokey Yunnick, in this Reality I never did bond with the Hydra, my mind just doesn't see what you & Jeremy see when playing with the ECU.

OTOH, I've become quite accustomed to the power and just can't go back to a stock Miata. I'll just have to learn to live with the LS2 and a stock ECU.

JayL 06-20-2009 01:02 AM

I've learned the basics of tuning and only possess enough knowledge to be potentially dangerous when left unsupervised.

As for getting accustomed to the power, I'm with you on that one. My car already feels slow and I need more. A LS2 with a turbo or two would probably keep me happy for awhile. I see that you are in Tuscon, any chance that you were on Sonoran Muscle Cars in the past?

SafetyFast 06-20-2009 01:09 AM

No, my toy is still up in Palisade being constructed. I'm hoping it'll be ready in time for the FM Summer Camp. AFAIK, there aren't many V8 Miatas in AZ.

Oops! I just tried to hit the Sonoran Muscle Cars website...

I'm not even sure if that group is still around. When I lived down there they were a pretty interesting group of guys that did everything from car shows, track racing to street racing. Quite a big variety of cars as well. Anyways, there was a guy with a Miata that was part of the group and I thought it might be you.

My settings are

launch rpm - 4000
launch fuel cut- 80
launch spark cut- 60

My car builds about 2-3 psi of boost which is actually enough for a decent launch without too much tirespin on 6ULs. Not necksnappingly fast at all but OK. My RPMs don't rise. There's no popping though.

I have a 3071 w/ 750ccs and a tial gate as well. Stock coils.

Wanted to dig this up. Running a 2.5 Anyone else tried the above?

Who gives a shit if anyone else tried it. This is not hard to do/undo. Just plug in the settings. If it works then it works. Experiment.

Note that launch control on Hydra 2.5 kinda sucks because timing doesn't retard. It's hard to build boost at 20* of timing.

You probably won't blow up your car. Also, note that launch control is weather-sensitive. Blah.

Canyonfive 10-10-2012 09:40 PM

Gear trim would reduce timing.. how does that work in conjunction with LC. I can always swap maps for times that require launches

gear trim will reduce it all through first. Still sucks. yah you could trigger map switch to your clutch switch. i can't do that cus i use that map for meth. good idea. creative.

Canyonfive 10-11-2012 12:51 PM

Good stuff. Any idea How it actually knows what gear im in?

Faeflora 10-11-2012 06:56 PM

Read the factory manual. It says in there. And other good stuff.

There is a place where u enter max mph for each gear. Or somethibgike that. Google hydra 2.5 manual

I've run it on my 2.5. It built boost just fine.
