Me too. 108 in a 55 back when I was going to VA Tech living south of Baltimore. Cop clocked me on I-81 while I was going south and he was going north. This was back in 1988. Saml01 doesn't know what he's talking about. Mobile radar has been able to detect speed with the cop car moving in the opposite direction for quite some time. I didn't realized he turned around and was chasing me until I noticed him in the rear view after I slowed down for traffic.

I got fingerprinted and posted bail and was let go. At court (BFE court) it was me, the cop and the judge. The judge suspended my license for 6 months but couldn't revoke it because I had an MD license. He fined me $500. I know that after I left, he and the cop split the fine because I had to go next door to the bank to get the cash. I never heard anything from insurance, VA DMV, MD DMV. In the end it was cheaper for me. But college student $500 back in 1988 was a lot more than current $500. I think I was only making $5 an hour.

Koto meant the laser doesn't have to hit you to be detected, I'm pretty sure. Which is true, but it's a lot pickier than radar.

Right, the detector can pick up scatter and reflections. Most of the time mine picks up late-model GM truck brake lights and automatic cruise control..

Yeah - have you ever seen it do anything useful? I've never been tagged by radar (though I have been in club runs where someone else CB'd his Valentine was going off). But I've been lasered many times on the way to work. Cops here will park their bikes off a side street, literally hide in a bush, and stick the gun through the branches. Then, because you're such a danger on this walled in road, they walk out into the street with their hand up and write you a ticket.

It's a tax on driving. Fine, but I wish they'd just tax me instead and let me drive.

On the other hand, I've passed cops who were going 80 or 85 on the freeway countless times. They are either writting tickets today, or they aren't. But the flow of traffic is 20-25 over at all times, going the speed limit is dangerous.

Anyway, before I got distracted, I'd love to have a laser detector, but I've never heard of one that works. And you can't slow down in 0.300 seconds. Jammers seem the only viable option?

That's the bottom line. A buddy of mine who's a cop tells me you get reamed if you come in under your quota for tickets.

That's just the thing - laser is instant-on in nature in addition to being LOS. Very hard to detect reliably. Luckily for me, laser is seldom used here.

BTW, put your location in your profile so we know where you're from!

It's not a quota. It's a performance goal.

I passed a cop in similar situations...a lot of them leave their radar on all the time...thats how I got one of my tickets.

ya, don't speed, you endangering others that drive on the road. Like my mother who drives really slow, or my younger sister who is just learning how to drive. Speeding kills lives, speed limits were/are created for a reason. If you want to drive fast take it to the track and get it all out.

I this most of us just want to avoid a ticket for 20mph over on a 55mph highway, which is rediculas.

To fill the coffers of the local treasury..

Show me some statistics that relate speed to deaths, seems the places most liberal with speed limits have the lowest accident rate. Same mentality with the gun control types. "If no one has guns, then no one will get shot" and "If we set a low speed limit, then there will be no traffic accidents" are both false an naive statements.

You know, you might feel a little more at home over at Miata.net.

Speeding does not kill lives. Speed limits were created because too many morons don't know how to drive and we cater to the lowest common denominator.

1. As I said, speeding does not kill, rapid deceleration kills. Maybe we should outlaw crashing and that would solve the problem.

2. If speeding kills why are traffic accidents the number 1 cause of road going deaths? It's because someone was not in control of their vehicle. Morons kill, fast drivers are not necessarily morons. It's just that a high percentage of morons drive beyond their ability. I propose we also outlaw morons too.

3. Your black and white view of the world is more suited to an autistic person who cannot function without extreme structure, suggesting that you too might be a moron and maybe should be outlawed as well. If Phillip was still here you'd already be banned.

4. Your mother and sister are both problems on the road. Your mom drives too slow, this causes a speed differential in traffic which leads to dangerous situations, I wonder how many deaths she's responsible for... we'll never know because she obviously doesn't use her review mirror to watch the traffic piling up behind her. You sister is even a worse risk on the road, no doubt she hesitates and has trouble making decisions as she "learns" how to drive while the rest of us pay the price for that training... take her to bondurant and have her learn how to defensively drive right rather than being selfish and foisting her on the road going public that does know how to drive. Stop counting on our altruism to keep her safe.

5. Well need I say more. Next time you type something you might want to actually read what you are communicating. My god man, pull the stick out of your ***!

I know what I am talking about, and don't assume I didnt know they have radar that now registers speed while the cop car is moving. The only thing I didnt know was that laser detectors dont have to be pointed at you for them to be detected.

My money is still on the fact that he was taken for the red, not for speeding. Someone mentioned they got a ticket because the cops always leave their radar on. In this case there is no proving if that was the case, whether it was on, off, or on and pointed in the right direction. I think the cop couldnt have just randomly stopped at a light, and started pointing his radar gun at oncoming traffic.

This is just what I believe, theres just no knowing what really happened.

Have you heard of the radar thats shot from an airplane passing overhead? Thats some seriously cool ****.

When guys used to drag race at the north part of the Garden State Parkway (NJ), a cop would usually sit at the top of this one hill and then pull over the loser to add insult to injury.
