Rebuild time ;)

Joe Perez 10-27-2008 12:08 PM

Now that is genuinely impressive. Care to share what happened just prior to the expensive noise?

TURNS101 10-27-2008 12:30 PM

I will share.
I was at the final round for the year in the local Pro AM Drift series.
Everything was fine. EGT,AF,oil pres, coolant temp. Low boost = 14.5psi
100 oct fuel

I was close to the rev limiter. Popped off it a few times as usual at this part of th track.

Then just a BOOOOM!!! Then someone threw a hand full of nuts and bolts at my car
At first, I was like Fuk me, transmission again!!!
Until I heard my engine was no longer running and the huge cloud of smoky oil.
I happen to be be right nexcxt to the pits and pull right in. Small flame on downpipe from oil, I blew out.

Then oil just ran out from from under the car like a headshot on a violent movie :crx:

SO things seemed fine and then BAAAAM

patsmx5 10-27-2008 12:31 PM

Nice. +1 on all the details that lead up to this blessing.

NINJA EDIT: Were you running a harmonic balancer?

m2cupcar 10-27-2008 12:34 PM

Given the duty your car sees, I think you were due for a forged build. After this, you will only have to think of transmissions...;) until you buy a six speed, right?

TURNS101 10-27-2008 12:56 PM

I think I was due for a build.

I did have the stock Harmonic balancer on there.

I also have a 6 speed now :)

patsmx5 10-27-2008 01:00 PM

Hmm. In for picks of the tear down. Wondering if the oil pump gears died and that caused the bottom end to die or what.

And put some pics of the engine bay before too. I wanna see. :)

y8s 10-27-2008 01:09 PM

ever over-rev your engine accidentally (or deliberately)?

elesjuan 10-27-2008 01:21 PM

Looks like a rod bolt might've failed? Damn..

What do you mean by over rev?

I have my Tech limiter set at 7200 with 2 stages. i think thats what he said(my tuner). spark cut and then if it continues it totally cuts the firing??

So I never brought it past there and I never sat on the rev limiter on purpose.

Ben 10-27-2008 01:40 PM

I was looking for 1 cup? :dunno:

Damn dude. At least you broke it at the end of the year.

Stein 10-27-2008 01:44 PM

Well, at least "turbo not hit block" :giggle:Unfortunately, can't say the same for the rod(s).

+1 for pics on internal carnage.

TURNS101 10-27-2008 01:53 PM

I knew the title would get everyones attention ;)

I will get internal pics up.
It will be awhile though. I have to chill and take it apart slowly.

I have a new baby that I have to hang out with. So this will be taken apart when I have time here and there..

welcome to the real (my) world ;) new babies are far better than old babies anyway :giggle:

I think he means mechanically over-rev, like missing a shift and getting the wrong (lower) gear.

yeah that. either hitting 3rd instead of 5th or going into a corner with higher revs than your downshift can handle.

fmowry 10-27-2008 02:44 PM

I popped mine at the dragstrip at 16 psi and a 50 shot. Mine was definitely knock at about 6500 rpm. Only one rod snapped and you could see the det mark on the top of the piston. Similar carnage. I had parts go through the oil pan too.

No, nothing like that.
Just in gear hitting the rev limiter from throttle.
Not into a gear too low.

Ben 10-27-2008 02:53 PM

It really does look like the rod cap bolt came off?! Odd.

ApexOnYou 10-27-2008 03:00 PM

+1 That looks like that cap came right off.. Sheared studs? I've never seen that.

TURNS101 10-27-2008 03:07 PM

Well I hope I did something impressive for you guys here LOL!!

Once I pull the engine and my machinist takes it apart we will do an investigation and see what happened...

Now go to my buils thread in DIY and help me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hustler 10-27-2008 10:21 PM

this thread makes me happy that I have pistons, rods, and ARP everything.

Yeah. You're motor will be very much "like new" for a long time to come.

Joe Perez 10-27-2008 10:29 PM

I'm still trying to come to terms with the second image. Did the shaft break completely off the big end of the rod? Assuming that the rod cap is facing the camera, the shaft should be, well, it should be pointing straight away from the camera, embedded lengthwise in the block.

TURNS101 10-27-2008 11:12 PM

Good point Joe.
That is taking the picture laying on my back looking up at the oil pan..
So that rod is actually facing lets say the starter and clutch slave.

TURNS101 10-27-2008 11:16 PM

looking at it -its right behind the clutch slave
I have the magnet pointer on the bottom half of the rod.
When i move the rod with the magnet, it feels really destroyed in there.
Did that chip my F'n motor mount???

TravisR 10-28-2008 10:56 PM

I think a rod bolt failure is the only way that could of happened. Bolt failed crank was rotating over at BDC or TDC, journal popped out and the bottom end of the rod just kept on trucking to the block wall. The thing I don't get is that it seems like the cylinder wall would stop it before the oil pan?? It must be really messy in there.

TURNS101 10-28-2008 11:57 PM

No shit LOL

I will take pics for all when I pull it apart. I was also wondering about why the oil pan and not the block. I guess it just wanted to head south..

ldyzluvdis06 10-30-2008 03:46 PM

it sucks...but now you are forced into rebuilding :) i kind of like it when shit breaks becasue i dont have to try to talk my fiance into "letting" me buy something new...if it breaks...I HAVE TO :fawk:

The Sauce 10-30-2008 03:57 PM

Damn, thread title totally threw me off.
