2003 Z1000
 

I have the chance to buy a 2003 z1000, completely stock (sprocket change and some handle bars, but nothing i care about). He wants 4,800, I know the kid and I know the guy who owned it before him. Seems to be a solid bike, it has 8500 miles.

What do you guys think?

Kelly Blue Book says that it would retail for $5400 in excellent condition. Most of the '03s on cycletrader start at $4500 up to $6500.

This won't be your first bike, will it?

the price sounds a little high, I would think 4k cash is a better price. for an 03 that mileage is a little high, even if they are highway miles.

Alright, you should be fine then. Like Sid said, the miles are a little high for that year (my '03 Duc has 6000 on it) but if you know the riders and the history of the bike, I wouldn't worry too much about it. I'd offer $4500.

Dude 8500 miles is nothing. That bike is still a baby. Besides, it's all about condition. I'd take a 10k mile 06 that's been respected and cared for before a 500 mile bike that's spent half of those miles on one wheel.

FWIW, I have 18k miles on my GSXR, and many of my friends have 20,30,50k miles on their sport bikes.
My dad has nearly 100k on his Honda 'wing. Ahh, and one of his Honda buddies has over 200k on his...

A lot of the time since '03 it's been stored.

I haven't ridden more than 100 miles in the past 11 months. But then again I broke my shoulder, the bones above and below my knee, my knee itself, and tore up a ligament, in a motorcycle accident nearly a year ago....

I've got some gruesome pics of myself from an accident almost 2 years ago. No broken bones, but more road rash than I prefer.

Well one of the guys definitely did some wheelies with it, but never stunted it. My friend who has it now definitely has not done anything but ridden it.

The road rash hurts just as bad as the broken bones. I was in most of my gear, but not the jacket, so my left arm got it pretty bad, rashed on one side, bruised on the other.

I was lucky that my head did not contact anything. My sunglasses didn't even budge. I had the paramedic remove em from my face for me during the ride in to the see the incompetents at the hospital, but that's a different story.

If you ever find yourself north of Atlanta and in need of medical care, do NOT go to Gwinnett Medical Center.

I am always cautious of bikes that have been stunted. Make sure the front end is in good shape and the fork seals don't leak. The seals are cheap, but a PITA to replace. There are services that will laser check the alignment of the bike for a small fee. I had mine done by CompuTrack (I think) at Road Atlanta.

Yeah, wheelies typically wear steering head bearings and fork seals after a while. If he was a proficient stunta, there shouldn't really be anything wrong.

yeah but he didn't have the bike for long, when the weather warms up ill take it for a ride.
