24 PSI...300 hp Jetski . . . I want

3 Attachment(s)
Went Jetskiing with my buddy today. . .
he has a 03 honda turbo jet ski.
Rough mod list includes:
autronic ECU
larger injectors
bigger turbo
custom intercooler
MSD coils
Upgraded impeller
Upgraded Titanium lifter springs

We swapped back and forth between that and his dads run of the mill jet ski

HOLY FUCK. I have never been on a jet ski that pulled so hard. This thing is NUTS. you punch it, wait about a half second and boost comes in so strong you have to hold on tight. The thing is just crazy fast, and with the impeller there is no cavitation, it just gets up and go as if it was on drag slicks and a prepped track. I gotta say, the original owner put some serious cash in this thing. We ran it at 10 PSI most of the day, and brought it up to 22 PSI. Its a strange thing hearing that turbo.

I had my gf on the back at one point and she was going nuts trying to hold on.

At 24 PSI this thing is around 300 HP. INSANE.

Craigslist photos...probably will crap out in a few days:

I used to work at a Yamaha dealer, and rebuilt a Waverunner last summer. They are boosted with a Rotrex. Funny though, it says "HKS" on the compressor housing. But it is a Rotrex. Looked big too... at least a C30-74. It only runs at 8PSI and makes 220hp. It would be sweet to up the boost on it. But it's driven right off the crank so that's not possible. I can't imagine a turbo though, having the boost hit like that. Must be nuts.

viperormiata 05-07-2011 10:23 PM

A friend of mine in Key West has one of those. I'm pretty sure it is still on the stock turbo, but even so....it's insane to ride.

icantthink4155 05-08-2011 10:15 AM

I know nothing, absolutely nothing, about jetskis. How much hp does a normal one have?

Same here. I didn't even know they made turbo jetski's... Now I'm searching craigslist and found a supercharged one. Insane.

240_to_miata 05-08-2011 10:48 AM

I think the stock turbo from the factory was 160. Most are much less

NA6C-Guy 05-08-2011 10:56 AM

Just think of it in motorcycle terms. A lot in the 100 range, plus or minus 50 depending on their advertised performance, roughly. I've always wanted to build a turbo rotary pwc.

inferno94 05-08-2011 11:01 AM

The new ones are heavy, some are 1200lbs. Mine is a 450lb 97 seadoo gs 2 seater has 90 hp and is faster under all conditions than every new 150-160hp seadoos I've encountered.

That said there is a guy I know who has a faster ski it's a RXTX 255hp factory supercharged seadoo. Those aren't a whole lot faster top speed wise but accelerate like a mofo. I haven't been in water with a honda yet but have seen others.

I don't know much about other brands except that most people have had reliability issues with anything but seadoo or honda.

I tried the whole I want to turbo my ski argument with the wife and I think the best I'm going to get away with is swapping out the .72L for a .79L (90 -> 110-120hp + more upgradeable) if I can ever kill the little engine.

The boosted skis really drink up the fuel don't they.

redfred18t 05-08-2011 11:11 AM

jesus that thing must be awesome. I was at lake lanier last year in GA and rented a jet ski, over 40 mph it started to get really choppy. Got it up to 50 I think and thought I was going to die lol. I cant even begin to imagine the pants shitting that would ensue if I played with that thing

I disagree the old 2 stroke sea doos have major issues with oil injection

Holy damn. I never really thought about it but I figured they had like gokart engines or something I didnt realize they any sort of real power.

I've heard similar from others, though having 0 issues myself. Most just run premix and problem solved.

What is really fun is crossing sections of the great lakes, I even saw a documentary of two Canadians making a round trip to Russia from Alaska on a couple of 8 year old, 2 stroke machines.

Bryce 05-08-2011 02:05 PM

This thread needs more awesome videos of said jet skis.

65mph on a smooth lake is pretty fun. I sometimes wondered what would happen if I were to do an abrupt turn at those speeds. Visions of a rock skipping on water come to mind.

How is that even possible?

Granted, I have little basis for comparison, but a Suzuki Hayabusa (1350cc, 190 HP naturally-aspirated) weighs less than 600 lbs wet. Does one of these things actually contain twice as much awesome as a 'Busa? Or are they just ballasting them with depleted uranium?

the heavier they are, the smoother they ride - and water is SIGNIFICANTLY rougher than a heavily potholed road.

That being said, I rock two of these:
Attachment 189098

A 1989 and a 1987 kawasaki 650sx - 2 strokers, probably about 60-70hp each. I'm going to guess their weight at probably 200-240lbs each. Have fun and get your ass kicked doing it!!

NA6C-Guy 05-08-2011 04:07 PM

I'd much rather ride a sit down model. Newer ones might be heavy, but they make up for it in power, smoothness and refinement. Plus the really heavy ones are the long ass, 3 and 4 seater models. The smaller ones are still heavy, but not nearly so much.

fooger03 05-08-2011 05:09 PM

I see the guys riding the "cadillacs" all of the time, big heavy PWCs. Usually the people that can afford to drop 12k on a PWC want something smooth, comfortable, and fast.

My little stand-ups are not smooth, they are not comfortable, and they are not "fast", though fast is a relative term, and they are generally "fast enough" for me; I'm don't go out to cruise lakes with them.

It's really quite entertaining though, to see the guys on the cadillacs rubberneck, slow-down, and even stop altogether in order to watch me play. I think they are jealous because they know that the "fun stuff" that their waverunners can do is limited to this:
o Go straight
o Turn
o Get a couple inches of air if a big enough boat drives by
o Get stuck upside down

I understand the dynamics involved, I just didn't expect them to be that heavy. I mean, at 1,200 lbs, you are literally one full beer keg short of a first-gen Geo Metro!

I get it. It's just that if I were going to spend $12k on a large PWC, I'd buy a small boat.

Seriously- you can get a brand new Searay / Bayliner / etc bowrider in the 17-18' class the for pretty much the same money, complete with engine and trailer. I can't imagine it being significantly less fun than a Cadillac PWC (I've driven a 21' Bayliner, and it's entirely possible to scare the ever-loving shit out of yourself with one even on calm seas) and of course, you have the option to stop in the middle of the lake and tap the aforementioned keg when you're ready to relax.

Quite probable as I was guessing before. I do think the 4 seaters are in that range but who buys those?

Boats suck compared to PWC's, you get way more fun per dollar with them. What other machine can be going 90kph and make a 180deg turn then be instantly going the same 90kph the other way. Or the full speed 360 then back straight at full tilt without really slowing at all.

Maybe this is why my wife doesn't want me to get a bike?

fooger03 05-08-2011 10:43 PM

There has to be a line to define when it is / isnt a PWC. I'd like to draw the line between "large pwc" and "small boat" 2 seats or less, and 3 seats or more; If a driver can tow a skier, with an observer facing the rear, it's no longer a "personal watercraft" - it is simply a "watercraft"

We build those WaveRunners at the assembly plant I work at here in GA, here's one of those engines about to be installed, 1812cc/1.8L I4:

I got to take one of the new prototypes out a few weekends ago, they are a ton of fun to throw around on the lake and fast as hell, topping out at 65ish mph. That may sound slow compared to car speeds, but that's pretty fast across the water. Yamaha likes to advertise the fact that these WaveRunners will out-accelerate a new Z06 from 0-30 mph.

Anyway, the jetski in the first post sounds nuts, I bet that would be a ton of fun!

Faeflora 05-09-2011 10:36 AM

GF and I rented some 160hp skis at the cayman islands last year. AWESOMMME some of the most fun I've ever had.

When I'm on the beach, hearing them buzz around is annoying as fuck but riding them is superrr.

miata2fast 05-09-2011 06:06 PM

I have a SeaDoo RXP 215. It is just under 900lbs, and has 215 hp from a centrifigal supercharged 1.5 liter 3 cyl Rotrex. It sounds awsome, and accelerates hard. I truely love that damn thing.

I pulled the blower to upgrade it with the blower from the current model which is rated at 255 hp. It is just as addicting to modify as hot cars.

The funny thing about those things, is from the factory the sport models will go no more than 70 mph no matter if they are making 150 hp or 300 hp. It has something to do with an agreement with the manufacturers and the Coast Guard.

I hear it costs about $8,000 or more to gain 10 mph of top speed, and maintain hard acceleration.

240_to_miata 05-09-2011 06:15 PM

yeah top speed is tough. The Previous owner got it up to 73 on GPS, and that was after smoothing some things out on the hull and playing around with different impellers. On flat water I saw 65 - 70, didnt matter if my gf was on the back or not.

inferno94 05-09-2011 06:36 PM

Mine goes the same speed (governed to 7000rpm cause I like it reliable) with a tube, 3 people and a full tank or just me, tucked while running on fumes.

Changing impellers can get them going a bit faster but hull design is 90% of speed. I have a pump off an xp on mine, the same hull and I get the same speeds they do just bouncier and without reverse.

240_to_miata 05-09-2011 07:33 PM

Ill be buying my own ski next summer. Right now I just have too much money going into my paint project / getting this thing reliable for the track.

Plus I still need a hitch for the MINI S lol.

TurboTim 05-09-2011 09:58 PM

I have 2 friends with those turbo hondas; nice boats overall but I'm a seadoo guy I guess...then again, I prefer turbos over centrifugal supers....ehh whatever.

The last ski i owned was a '97 xp and absolutely loved it; the old 2 stroke seadoo xp hulls were so damn light and flickable. You could easily do controllable full speed 360deg. spins without risk of killing yourself. My dad still has his '99 GSX limited, the last of the 2 person seadoos and came with their largest 2 stroke: 951cc twin @135hp. That's a 62mph ski and also quite light compared to the sleds out nowadays. Sure, the new 3+ person 4stroke skis are fast as hell and accelerate, and are very smooth due to their weight, but IMHO that takes a lot of the fun out of it. I like to be able to flick the things around, instead of just "going along for the ride".

I also had a '92 550sx jetski that my dad sold mistakenly while I was at school, relatively slow but insanely fun to ride. I will have another original hull standup kawasaki again at some point damnit.

Bryce 05-10-2011 12:06 AM

Anybody here ridden a wetbike? I remember seeing my parents riding them around the the lake when i was young. They werent something you could fling around like a jet ski, and they looked like a good challenge that would be fun to learn to ride.

spoolin2bars 05-10-2011 12:47 AM

my buddies moving to a house on a canal on padre island. he's about to trade his harley for the rxt 260. supposedly does 73mph and only has 11hrs. on it. that sounds scary fast on a jet ski.

haha awww shitznit. I definitely remember those. I don't think I've ever seen anyone ride one more than 50feet. I didn't know they had suzuki engines in 'em.

Have your ridden a modern SeaDoo. The turning capability is incredible. It is all you can do to hold on when in a turn. If there is a little chop it bites harder, and it is physically impossible to hold on and not get thrown off if you attempt to get the maximum turning speed. I had the unfortunate pleasure of learning that the hard way.

It is like driving an open wheel race car with bench seat.

TurboTim 05-10-2011 09:54 AM

There's more you can do with body language on an older lighter seadoo than the newer heavier skis. I'm not saying the new boats don't handle well, they just feel heavy, not "light and flickable". Yeah, yanking the bars on a new ski will make it hook and throw you into the air and probably hurt you if you're not ready for it. On the older lighter skis, you could definitely control the ski easier as it's doing it's thing. IMHO, more overall fun that way. Or I haven't been on the right "new" ski, or I need to gain some weight and strength :dunno:

thagr81 us 05-10-2011 11:18 AM

This thread makes me want to buy another jet-ski... Dammit!

fooger03 05-10-2011 11:30 AM

do it!!!

I paid 1500 for two skis and a trailer - nobody wants jet skis, so they're fuckin cheap.

thagr81 us 05-10-2011 11:38 AM

True... My only problem is that I work all the damn time and when I don't I'm either hiking or drinking beer. Haha Maybe a jet-ski would change this... Hmmmm.

fooger03 05-10-2011 12:06 PM

my fav part about the jet skis, i come home from work, drag the trailer to the truck by hand, and go. At the launch ramp, I spray some starting fluid into the air filter, start it up, and unstrap. If there aren't a lot of boats going in/out (weekday) i simply drag the ski up out of the water a lil bit and leave it on the launch ramp as I park. The launch ramp is 10 minutes from home - total time from arriving home from work until starting the ski in the water is 15-20 minutes. There's just so much shit you don't have to deal with compared to a 'boat', and since it can be a very physically demanding activity, you aren't out for hours upon hours at a time. I get exhausted, trailer the ski, swing by the gas station to fill it back up, make it home, and roll the trailer back to it's parking spot, all in time for dinner.

thagr81 us 05-10-2011 12:26 PM

Yeah... I live an hour or so from an body of water that will allow a jetski on it (HP restrictions FTL).

The river / lake in town doesn't have power restrictions, simply a no PWC rule, you're good with your 300hp bass boat though.

I have a 45min - 1hr drive down to Lake Erie to get to use mine, bleh.

I would have to agree. Boats can be a pain in the ass sometimes.

I can not believe how much gas a ski can drink. I mean come on. Mine holds 12-13 gallons, and on a day where there are multiple riders and we are out all day, I have to fill it 3 times. Ouch!

Around here we get up early and run offshore when the waves have a nice low roll, then head in for the intercoastal shallows where there is less chop. Offshore riding in big waves in the afternoon is fun, but it will beat you down in a hurry. I think the most fun riding is in small rivers. It is like being on a twisty mountain road with no speed limit. I never get tired of it.

pdexta 05-10-2011 03:13 PM

I've been looking for a jet ski, just haven't had the right one come along. They seem really expensive here. A few around $1500 but they're all 15+ years old and seem to have problems, can't find much of anything in decent condition under $2000. Maybe it's just the wrong time of year to be looking.

fooger03 05-10-2011 10:44 PM

they're expensive b/c you're in florida

come to ohio and get some on the cheap

I think my jet skis hold 5 gallons each. On an average trip, they'll run through about half a tank - I think twice my body has been able to outlast the fuel tank. With the little light jet skis, you actually have to put physical effort into going full throttle - it'll wear the shit out of you to run 2 miles all out on anything but a glass surface. The big wave runners will have you running at full throttle all day long.
