240SX tune-up

My 240SX hit 150,000 miles this past week and with the Miata nearly out of the garage, I figured I would start looking at giving the engine an overhaul. I know I want to change the head gasket, valve cover gasket, exhaust/intake gasket, etc... The thing is, should I take the motor out of the car to work on it or not? The motor appears to be in good condition, but it seems that the oil pick-up tube gets clogged or something because the valves tick like there isn't a drop of oil in the head on occasion. So I am planning on pulling the pan. If I am going through all this, think it would be worth the trouble to just pull the motor and put in a new clutch and lightened flywheel? Sorry about the indecisiveness, but I know that a lot of people here have done this more than I have.

I had the Miata first, so it is going faster first. I still need a reliable daily driver though, so any constructive comments are welcome.

really its your call man. how the fuck are we supposed to know what health your motor is in and what you need to do to it to keep it running healthy.

It's not hard to pull the engine in a 240sx, just pull the bitch. And fix everything that's fucked while it's apart. Don't cut corners, etc. Sounds like it may need some work anyways.

its a SOHC, I suppose I will just pull it then. Who knows how much work it really needs. Do you guys recommend pulling all of the guts out of the motor for a detailed inspection, or just look over the parts and make sure they don't look bad? I don't want this to be a 1 month project because who knows how long it is going to be before I blow up the miata's motor :giggle:

Replace the timing chain guides with metal ones while you are at it, the plastic ones like to break and if they do you can say goodbye to you valves.

I would measure oil pressure hot and cold, and do a leakdown test before removing the engine. Go from there.

and smaller... If I wanted to make this car go fast right now, I would turbo the KA. Who likes torque? I like torque :skid:

mx5roadster I had heard of having to do this with the VH45 motors, it never crossed my mind to check the KA for this as well, will do. Pat I'll need to find a way of testing the oil pressure, but the leak-down I will and can do before removal

An oil pressure gauge works pretty good. ;)

If you need some help pulling a KA, holla. I've done it a few times.
