6 reasons why things break
 

I read this in my late teens in one of Carroll Smith's "___ to Win" books. It's basic info but I thought it was very profound. Helps to break down a problem and makes the universe a little less chaotic.

1)design defect
2)material defect
3)manufacturing defect
4)used beyond designed life span
5)used beyond designed stress levels (thermodynamic, mechanical, vibration, corrosive, radiation)
6)inadequate maintenance

When I first read it, I thought I only had control over #4 and #6. There are parts on my car today where I control all but #2 and I still control where I get my materials from.

BTW, it's been a long time since I read that book. If I listed one incorrectly, please tell me.

I'd double check that for you but engineering to win has already been packed for the move. that whole series should be required reading as an underclassmen when studying mechanical engineering. Nut, Bolts, Fasteners, and Plumbing was also a fantastic resource.
