In Feb 1984, his 11 year old son Jody was kidnapped by karate instructor Jeffrey Doucet, and taken from their hometown of Baton Rouge to Anaheim, CA. There, Jody was held in captivity for approximately two weeks, during which period he was repeatedly raped.
On Feb 29 of that year, Doucet was arrested and Jody was freed, and it was discovered that Doucet has been sexually abusing Jody for over a year.
On March 16, 1984, Doucet was flown back to Louisiana to face trial. He arrived at Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport and was led in handcuffs by police officers through the airport at around 9:30 p.m. Gary Plauché knew of this, and he went to the airport and waited at a bank of payphones adjacent to where he knew Doucet would pass by.
As Doucet was led by officers past the area in which Gary Plauché was waiting in ambush, Plauché turned and shot him in the head, killing him. The event was recoded by a camera crew from WBRZ-TV, and the image at the left is a still frame from that video.
At trial, Plauché was sentenced to 300 hours of community service.
As a result of all of this, the image has become somewhat famous, and is frequently trotted out on Fathers' Day each year, as a symbol of inspiration.
