Is there a way to stop the loading of an embedded Youtube video without reloading the page?

Not really, but you can skip to the very end of the video you no longer want to watch so it only loads the last few seconds, thus less slow down.

Note the ad in the lower-right quadrant of the screen. Anything seem odd about that? Remember, they're promoting "ADI's Newest Products."

Sound Blaster AWE32.

My first inclination would be to call it DB15 as well, but a few years back when I looked into this the internet corrected me and Ive since been able to remember its DA15.
I didnt realize the reasoning behind it though, or that the DB9 is a DE9. Now I know, haha

Speaking of geeky, my relatively new motherboard has a serial port on it, and it actually gets used occasionally (albeit mostly because of loathsome USB to serial drivers)

That, my friends, is a sound card. And the port you're referring to is a 15 pin joystick port.

I realized that after posting when I saw the two headphone jacks... but I was too lazy to go back and fix.

speaking of which, does anyone have any use for a SB Live Value! card? it has a joystick port!

I still have an old 15-pin Logitech Flight Stick in a bin in my basement. Looks like this but the base is gray.

I used to play the hell out of Microprose's F-19 Stealth Fighter on a 386 with that bad boy.

I got F-117 Nighthawk when it came out. Sweet!

I still have an ISA sound card & ISA modem in an old Micron baby AT that was my computer in college. Don't know why I haven't thrown it away yet; all the good/sentimental pr0n has already been archived off it.

Braineack 10-05-2011 02:18 PM

ahhhh.... the soothing dead noise of the old flight sims.

my first 16bit game:

this might have been first EGAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA:

Reverant 10-05-2011 02:19 PM

Both of these were good sims; my first sim was Ocean's X29 Retaliator, circa 1989. Keyboard was the only thing available back then.

this.

it used to be no problem to play games like that for hours with no music or anything yet when I play SC2, I've gotta have all kinds of stuff going on in the background

I am getting the urge to fire up the NES emulator and play Little Ninja Brothers.

Or this hacked version of River City Ransom.

Or this one.

Funny, I was playing Metroid just the other day. I have an emulator (NESren?) running on the media-center PC in the living room, and a USB gamepad which is fairly similar to the original NES controller. (Stylistically, it's more of a knockoff PS1 controller, but without the analog sticks.)

And it has a Turbo button, just like the old NES Advantage. Makes all the difference. :D

Speaking of which, I still have an Advantage lying around somewhere. I need to get off my ass and convert it to USB.

16 bit? Dude, the AGI game engine ran in an 8 bit environment. That game ran just fine on an Apple II, or on a 256k, 8088-equipped Tandy 1000 HX (my first x86-class machine.)

PQ1 ran in the same engine. PQ2 was written in SCI and ran at 320x200 (EGA).

The first PC game i ever had, purchased from the local Radio Shack store. I still have the original box and floppy disk.

Braineack 10-05-2011 02:57 PM

it's been a long time.

what I really meant to say was 256 colors.

I used to play The Black Cauldren before Gold Rush, in 16 colors, and we got a new video card for our 286 to play Gold Rush in 256 colors!!!!

Braineack 10-05-2011 03:02 PM

The lack of Sierra games in exsistence today is depressing...

I never even finsihed King's Quest 8.

It was so fail. Fuck 3d enviroments.

Now King's Quest 7 was actually good.

I think this was the last game of its kind...so sad. depressed mode again.

Braineack 10-05-2011 03:03 PM

Ken williams where are you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why?!?!??!?!?!?!

ScottFW 10-05-2011 03:15 PM

256 colors is newfangled whippersnapper stuff. I was playing Summer Games in monochrome on an Apple IIe. That shit is so old there's not even a youtube vid of it that I could find.

I used to play Accolade's Test Drive on a 286 with CGA graphics. Boo for only showing the intro and none of the titillating game play.

We were livin large when we got a 386 that supported EGA.

Last I heard, he had finished sailing across the Atlantic in a powerboat and was moderating an online forum where people pine about the old days. I was active there back in '03 or so, it's kind of depressing, though. http://www.sierragamers.com/

I always thought Ken was kind of weird. I first got into Sierra games back when the company was small enough that it was actually possible to write a letter to the owners of the company and get an actual response back. I still have a letter that Roberta wrote to me tucked away somewhere, along with several dozen letters from the Hint Department. (Remember them?)

I sort of lost interest in KQ after #5 (that was the first VGA one, right?)

Space Quest was my favorite series, and I had kind of the same let-down experience there. #1-3 were great, 4 was good, and I never finished 5. It just sucked that much.

By that time, of course, LucasArts had really gotten into full swing. Monkey Island, Sam & Max, Full Throttle, even Grim Fandango was excellent, despite being in a foo-foo 3D environment.

What would you say if I told you that it wasn't?

Huh. I never realized that they did a VGA remake of Gold Rush. The original was most definitely 16 colors, 160x200, under the AGI engine.

You know which game really sticks out in my mind, though? Manhunter 2: San Francisco.

Speaking of the advantage, have you heard the music by the band named "The Advantage"?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Advantage

moar:

On a totally unrelated yet highly ridiculous note, while my wife and I were in Thailand on the island of Samui, we stayed at a resort that happened to have a restaurant. And at this restaurant they had this heavily accented guitar and vocalist. he played all the weird songs of our youth and random ones from adulthood and fuck me if he didn't just roll from some james taylor into the super mario music. it sounded really good on an acoustic guitar!

so weird.

I had not.

There are two orchestral groups doing tours in homage to some of the great games in history. one is Video Games Live, the other is Play! A Video Game Symphony.

Etc.
