I need to do that to my Craftsman, the other ones I could care less about. I use the others mostly as hammers for tight spaces.

Don't trade it in if it's a USA Craftsman. The new Chinese Craftsman are the suck.

 

Of all my years of wrenching...the best socket wrench I ever used is the Harbor Freight extendable 3/8-1/4 wrench.

Bingo. It's a USA model. Not to mention the only place around here that will deal with Craftsman trade-ins is Sears in Key West. Lets just say they are not easy to work with.

I'd rather do the work myself.

I miss the rebuild kits they used to hand out too.

Thinking back about two years, they used to hand out NEW ratchets off the shelf for trades when you broke one. Last week I went to swap a broken ratchet and the dude gave me one that looked freaking used from a bin under his bench. The ---- is that about?? It sucked worse than the broken one.

Is it sad that I've started buying more of my hand tools from harbor freight? At least you know what quality to expect from them, which has started to pass Crapsman..

 

Craftsman is about on par with Harbor Freight now...I'm not joking. Those Pittsburgh ratchets work just fine. I like Gearwrench when it's on sale. Actually, Sears.com is blowing out some Gearwrench right now, it's worth checking out.

The ratchet in the pic is a first generation Kobalt, made under contract by Williams which is a division of Snap-On. They were really nice. They switched to Danaher-made tools later which were comparable to Craftsman. Now they are really crap, not even Harbor Freight quality. More like Wal-Mart Stanley or Allen junk.

 

That's the kind of service we get here. It's not worth it, really. I feel like I'm better off either spending the big bucks on Snap-On for a "buy it once" kind of deal, or buying HF knowing that when it breaks I can replace it for cheap.

Sad, isn't it? I value quality in the things I buy. Especially my tools and my musical instruments.



Not so random music. I actually ordered a Harmonica in C so I can play most of the blues standards from the OST for Cowboy Bebop. It arrived today, tomorrow starts the fun. It's a Hohner "Special 20"

Hell, even some of the HF hand tools have a lifetime warranty! One of my favorite ratchets as of recent is their $9 composite, which I feel is better quality than the last craftsman I bought. Damn thing hasn't let me down yet!

That was boss. I have yet to watch SAC. I may do that this weekend since it's slow season right now and I'm not working much this week.

If I had a job that depended on my tools, I would have nothing but snap-on. However, I don't, and sometimes(hehe) I can't justify spending the money on tools that seem to be made of gold.



edit: goshdarn, the music for this show was astonishing...

 

 

Jean-Pierre the Chicken is sad. He has always had a positive experience with Craftsman hand-tools, and with Sears' no-questions exchange policy, even after he's done something stupid like splitting a 36mm socket cleanly in half by using a massive impact wrench with a non-impact socket to remove the axle nut from a VW.
