Their claims are bullshit. Uhm, no. Cursor keys were the first combo used for character control if you consider Wolfenstein 3D to be the first FPS. It is generally agreed to be the first "modern" FPS, however it was by no means the first game which allowed the character to move around through the game environment and shoot things, while displaying the playfield from the point of view of the character.

Some would argue that Seawolf (1976) was the first "real" FPS, and while it does technically qualify as one (you look through a periscope from the perspective of the sub captain who would be commanding the torpedoes to be fired), it did not support movement of the character through the environment- your sub was essentially stationary.

Maze War (c. 1973) and Phantom Slayer (1982) were technically first-person perspective, but restricted movement to corridors and did not really permit true freedom of movement.

Personally, I call Battlezone (1980) the first FPS. It was ported to several personal computers starting in 1982-1983.

What I can't remember is what the controls were. I'm pretty sure that the C64 and Atati builds used the same twin joystick control as the arcade machine, however I don't think the DOS port did, particularly as having two joysticks connected to an x86-class machine was extremely rare, and having even one joystick was not especially common until well into the soundcard-era, which is how most people of the time got gameports on their machines in the first place.

Watch the Colbert Report, it makes fun of both sides, it's a comedy show based on current events and politics, how is he supposed to leave the politics behind?
