The point is that, when you really sit down and think about the characters and the so-called plot, most of the cute, adorable videogames of the 1980s portray a world filled with shocking terror and horrible violence on a scale which makes Doom (and Mortal Kombat, the other games that people got so riled up about in the '90s) seem downright pedestrian by comparison.
Mario, for instance, was a violent psychopath who hacked his way through a world inhabited by a seemingly endless succession of gruesome monsters, leaving a trail of carnage in his wake. Sidebar: a friend of mine was married this weekend in Georgia. After the "I now pronounce you" bit, the minister ended with "So say we all!" (crowd response.) |
