I welded these razorblades together with a 9-Volt battery and an old paperclip <G>:

Anyone doing a writeup on this DIY welding?

SKMetalworks 06-13-2009 10:27 PM

i wouldnt reccomend welding anything you dont want to crack.

I just used flux core to weld a ss vband to my cast turbine housing. I used half a 1lb spool of wire on it. Think it will hold?

You don't even need a 9volt... I welded a rollcage with matches.

Umm. Metallurgically i would say no. Cast iron has high carbon percentages. Where SS has chromium/nickel and low carbon content. The fact that you used flux core will add more impurities in the weld making it more likely to fail vs using MIG/TIG/STICK. Keep in mind that this will recieve the more extreme heating/cooling cycles out of any part of your exhaust. What i would of done is used TIG using cast iron filler. But ive heard of crazier things sticking togethor so i could be wrong. Did you ping the weld? (hit it with a blunted hammer to relieve the stress caused by heating the cast iron) Probably not. I hope for the best :2cents:

I hit it with a hammer to remove and slag and weld that did not stick. So I guess, yes, I did "ping" the weld. I welded the entire perimeter and it is on there what appears to be very string. I hit the 1/2" flange on the vband section with a sledge and it didn't come flying off. Also the penetration appears to be good. With the amount of welded area I just don't see how it could fall off. I know others who have done the same before, albeit with regular wire and shielding gas, and theirs have put up with everything they can throw at it.
