Any PS3 hackers here?
All the time I spent messing with my 360's this week got me thinking about getting a couple PS3's to play with. I don't know crap about them but it looks like you can hack them to play backups off an external HD just by throwing some code on a USB key and plugging it in. Is that all there is to it? Safe to plug into the internets after doing that? Any thing I should know about before I run to the pawnshop/CL to buy two PS3 Slims and a couple 1GB USB keys?

Leave the fucking consoles alone.

I heard the PSN hackers got lynched.

AFAIK the only way to reflash the firmware to do stuff like gamesave swap/mod/ect is to have the old update from like last year.

I'll assume that is true but I have seen some stuff talking about "downgraders". No idea if this is how you get them back to that state.
FWIW, I have a friend with a PS3 (not at all a hardcore gamer, not really sure what he even bought it for - maybe just for the blueray player) and he said a recent update pretty much trashed the console. I set him up to use it as a media station to watch AVIs and he has reported back that he's getting horrible lag since the last upgrade. |

Lets not derail the topic with questions about "Why?" rather than "How?" :)
I'm interested in this as well, however with the latest update I'm not sure how easy it is anymore. I may or may not have the security codes saved on a jump drive that got geohot in trouble... >.> |

In all honestly, I'm sure you greatly enjoy tinkering with them, I can completely understand. I actually have an original xbox with an 80gig in it, chipped to run off burned games, dashboard, etc. Just seems with the 360 they built in all the functions I could want, except the ability to steal games, which won't, as you've experienced, run online, which I greatly enjoy. But to each their own. |
