Any tribal spear experts in here?

Well, I picked up the tribal wooden spear awhile back and I figured its time to list it. I picked it up at a estate sale in mansion land here in CT. They had more weaponry but this was the only type of this item I picked up. Everything else they had was quality, so I'm guessing this is the real deal.

Its 56" from bottom to top. Otherwise its 45" to the end of the spear shaft with a 3.25" blade on the tip. The 4 removable knives are 5.5" total length with 3" blades. The skull, horns and feathers are def real and everything else looks legit. I'm not sure if it is, but it looks like bamboo.

I wish I had someone local to bring this type of stuff to. Most of the time I just wing it and let the people that know what it is bid it up. By chance, any of you know anything about these things?

lol

I watch that show all the time to try and learn as much as I can about shitz. Believe it or not its actually helped me out once or twice.

Sometimes the item is worth $3k-$4k and the guy ends up walking away with $700 telling the camera "I feel like I did ok". lol

Ok I know we have some random people that are experts at random , but did you really expect a tribal spear expert to show up on mt.net? Kudos to them if I'm wrong, but that's a stretch...

Opti 01-04-2012 12:25 AM

They dont have to sell him . He normally tells them hey its worth 5K ill give you 2500. I know quite a few industries that do more than 100% markup. All they have to do is turn around and go sell it somewhere else.

gearhead_318 01-04-2012 12:28 AM

Looks like some voodoo shyt, I wouldn't keep that in my house.

Forgot to mention the spear. I am no expert but pronounced eye sockets and elongated nose bridge on the skull remind me of an phillipines macaque.

Dont think its old though as you only have a little corrosion on the metal and if it was old probably be completely discolored.

Googled philippines spear and saw some similar spear points but nothing the same.

Think it was made for decoration, as the point doesnt seem like its secured well.

Dont really know about spears so Im probably wrong

I'm no expert, but that thing has all the signs of being a reproduction... it might be worth something, but no "tribesman" actually carried that thing out hunting. I've got $50 that you discover it's a display piece sold to tourists and made in India or or Indonesia.

lol @ virgin crew threads.

I'm not so much for tribal stuff, but I know a lot about traditional Filipino weapons. That thing looks just like any of my old, handmade blades. Same lines along the blades. Same surface conditions.

The blades, at least, look authentic to me. Via the pix.

I'm pretty impressed with the crowd at mt, so I'd ask here before I put myself on the stand on the egay forums. They'll ignore the question, click on my user name and pick my auctions apart for every little thing that isn't to code. Never happened to me personally, but I've read hundreds of posts where stores have been shut down due to malicious members.

Sometimes, I flip items for 5 times what I paid. 5 times! Some stuff I've got for free and made a weeks pay off it. Its crazy. 100% markup is my minimum. ;)

GF isn't happy about it being in the house either. I don't really mind it, but its not exactly a great decoration.

Normally I'd assume the same, but after seeing what was inside the house it came out of gives me reason to question it. I'd be very surprised if it was a more "modern day replica" and not indeed genuine.

Thanks for the comments man!

That's cool to hear that it matches up to what you guys say could be Filipino weaponry. Gives me a place to start searching.

revlimiter 01-04-2012 01:09 PM

The overall imagery doesn't look Filipino. You don't see skulls or that sort of wood much in that culture. I just meant that the daggers look to be produced using the same techniques.

Does she think it's ebil or something?

hustler 01-04-2012 02:11 PM

hey bros, how much can I get for my Pog collection?

gearhead_318 01-04-2012 02:16 PM

Use it to kill chipmunks.

Vashthestampede 01-04-2012 03:44 PM

Don't you just facking LOVE the internet? I was going to take the spear to a local shop to have it appraised, but instead I searched around online and found someone that specializes in tribal weaponry. Sent him an email with some pictures, then proceeded to fall asleep on the couch. Just woke up with a response (yes I took a lazy day).

This is what he had to say; "I wish I had better news but your spear/ staff with Monkey skull and Boar's tusks was made for sale probably in the 1970's- early 80's. It was made in the N. Philippines but only has "decorative" value. It would not appeal to a serious collector and thus has modest value of about $200-300."

This is actually not too bad of news for me, considering I bought the spear on a whim and bundled it with another item I was already getting a hell of a deal on. Paid $15 for it, so even if I get just $200 I'd be more than happy with that.

I now also have someone I can turn to with this sort of thing in the future. He said contact him any time if I come across any other pieces and he even says for the right price he'd be a buyer as well. :)

Opti 01-04-2012 05:13 PM

I feel like I need to go buy and sell something cause I called it.

Yeah man. Nice job!

I can actually say I love what I do for a living now. Always learning something new.

Working on the auction for the spear now. :)
