No, this isn't a political thread. It's a "let's all of us Americans commiserate about how we've been procrastinating the filing of our annual state and federal income tax returns, which are due on 15 April, but which ought to have been completed by early February, since that's when all of the W2 and 1099 forms are generally complete by" thread.

We have one of these every year.

Married and she's a private contractor, I think, so may pay out for the first time ever. FML I have no idea how to do our taxes this year. +Her boss is horrible about paperwork. Oh, and technically she is a contractor for two different caterers so I guess that makes it more fun. My side is easy.

Cashed in Dad's 401k accounts after his death this year. Major paperwork pain-in-the-***. On top of that, the stupid bank withheld some of the money, even though the total was less than 10 grand. So, all that has to go on the taxes, to hopefully be refunded.

Ought to see a couple of grand back. I use high deductions to limit my refund. No sense in letting the gov't get a free loan.

First time filing taxes jointly with the wife. In the past, with the house in my name and her being self-employed with well into the 5 figures to write off, it didn't make sense.

But we refi'd the house into both of our names in Sept, and now I'll just have her accountant do the taxes in such a way that she can separate our liabilities. Whatever tax return I should be getting isn't going to pay her business taxes.

(We keep our money separate.)

Here's to paying back another 26k in taxes that I spend on car parts and other stuff... apparently, I believe that paying quarterly is overrated.

I bought a house at the end of last year. So hopefully that 4k in closing costs that I get to write off helps. I will be making an appointment with my accountant hopefully next week to get it all done.

For the first time in a long time, I genuinely have no preconceived notions about what my returns are going to look like this year. I was self-employed from Jan- Aug, but paid only the first quarterly estimated installment (anticipating that I'd later score some writeoffs and credits that never materialized), but didn't earn as much as usual either, and my estimation was based on a good year. Then I was homeless and unemployed for a brief time, and now I'm a plain ole' W2 employee.

Plus, I still have utterly no idea how reciprocity works for someone who resides in NJ but works in NYC.

I have no clue about my taxes this year. Me and the wife both have our taxes setup as single with no dependents, so we will get some back. Every year I go through the entire process and try and go line by line with deductions, but in the end just end up getting standard deduction amount.

I had another kid this year, but didn't really change deductions so I should be getting some money...maybe?

I don't really know and usually I'm more on the ball about getting them done early in Feb but this year...yah...meh

Finally got my last W-2 from my previous employer in the mail yesterday. I'll probably start on it this weekend.

I just filed mine. Wasn't easy.

W2 for first half of year, then moved to Norfolk and changed residence to MD from VA, now independent contractor and another W2.

Then I 100% rented out my house so I declared that and there were some fun deductions in there. Hooray for depreciation.

Did anyone have different deductions showing on their paystubs versus their W2? Mine was single and no dependents, but two friends who work at different companies ended up owing money because the W2 showed dependents while the paychecks did not. So they got max taken out, but W2 shows that they were given money as if they claimed a dependent, so they owe money back that they never received...

Not sure if something changed with taxes (other than the change in Dec, which might have only been in NC?) but its about a thousand dollar drop in return from 2012 to 2013 which took them both from positive refund to owing money.. which blows big time.

I am single and no dependents and my W2 agreed with my stubs so I'm hoping I am in the positives this year still..

Funny how that never comes up in BIG states. Never is an approximation for the 99% of big state inhabitants.

If it's like VA/MD/DC, then you may have to file state returns in both but claim all your income on one and claim you made it all somewhere else on the other.

I suspect both NY and NJ will request payment in full (i.e. double). You just have to tell NY to stuff it.
