Default Anybody else living in the movie Idiocracy?

I would describe my self as being "slightly above avarage" intellectually. I'm not tooting my horn, I have no delusions that I'm special, and I'm not spell checking this post. I'm sure there are 150 people who are smarter than me on this board. I've noticed over the last couple of years a sudden dumbing down of the population. Its like people are just going through the motions of some routine and not using their brains. No one will give you a straight answer to a question. Anybody else feel like your aurguing with idiots every where you go?

Past 2-3 Week:

Ford Dealership, Service Manager, In response to scratching two of my rims on their tire machine.
"When you track your car it rolls the tire allowing the rim to bend on to the concrete. Your car is on youtube."

McDonalds, Window Clerk, In response to no change back from my order. It was 3.65 and I handed her 4.00. She hands me a dollar and I say is this the right change?
" I don't know sir, what else do you want me to do?"

Road Hazard Company, Call Center Employee
What is your name? "I won't give that to you" What is your employee id? "I won't give that to you" Let me speak to your manager. "She is not here" Ok, let me speak to whoever is in charge. "Im the only one here sir" Your the the only person in the building? "Yes, I don't know if you've noticed but we have a hurricane here on the east coast and everyone has gone home" That sucks, why are you answering phones then? " Nobody told me to leave." Give me your supervisors name so I can call back after the hurricane. "I have to hang up now sir your getting rude."

Gas Station, Lotto Customer, Buying tickets and scratching them as the employee is punching in her numbers in the pick your number machine. Then trying to cash them in and get more tickets while she stalls the clerk with something else.
Mam, you need to scratch your tickets on your own time not mine. "I was in line first" Yes, your were. Do you think its right to hold everyone else up in line so you don't have to go to the back of the line to redeem your tickets? "your rude, learn some manners."

Enterprise Rent a Car, Customer, Blocked me in the back parking lot by parking in the drive lane on the side of the building.
Who is driving the white Dodge truck? ...20sec...Who is driving the white Dodge truck right here...I point to it. "Um, thats my truck" Can you move it so I can leave? "Um, I am next in line can you give me a minute?" No, I can not. I need to leave now and you shouldn't have parked there in the first place. "There weren't any other parking spaces up front" Sir, move your car now. "Fine, I don't know what the big deal is" The big deal is that your blocking 30 cars in this back parking lot from leaving, and anybody trying to park that is wanting to do business with this company. The problem is you think your time is more valuable than 10 other people combined.

HEB Grocery Store, Customer in front of me, she has a giant cart filled to the brim with cheese, steaks, sausage, junk food, beer, wine, etc. Her total was 39.00. I had a small basket and my total was 55. I then walk outside and see her loading it in a new Caddy on chrome 24's. I said nice rims. "Que" I mumbled wtf under my breathe than found this nice tidbit at home...

The SNAP food benefits (used to be called food stamps) helps people with low incomes and resources buy the food they need for good health.
HHSC gives SNAP benefits through the Lone Star Card. This is a plastic card that is used like a credit card at the cash register to pay for purchases. Each month, the family’s approved monthly SNAP amount is placed in the card’s account.
Emergency SNAP benefits are also known as expedited SNAP because the benefits are given faster to those in an emergency situation, such as:
A family with resources worth $100 or less, and monthly income less than $150.
A family with resources and monthly income that are less than the most recent monthly expenses for rent/mortgage and utilities.
A family that includes a migrant or seasonal farm worker who has $100 or less in resources and very little income.

I know the feeling.

Over the last year or so, I've felt like I've matured massively, and started to look different at the world and the people in it.
And your example with people wasting other peoples time is one of the things that **** me off the most, although this has been an issue for years.

In general, people aren't really intelligent, and only a few I encounter during my days at work and out in the open would ever qualify as people I would be interested in getting to know. If this is a "first impression" issue, or a general dumbness is unknown, but nevertheless, people seem to lack a few bits of both social- and general intelligence.

My biggest issue with this is my own problem - not being as naive and ignorant as I used to, since life was so much easier when I was a kid.
How nice was it to not know about drugs and crime, people doing dumb stuff in traffic, STD's, smoking hazards and bills piling up in the drawer?

Ignorance is bliss - and nothing is like being able to take a big crap on responsibilities and everything else that grown-up-life throws at you.

I wanna be 14 again!

This.

I started trying to meditate yesterday, just to attempt to get over it. We can't fix everyone, only try to improve ourselves. Since we can't make others smarter, I figure my only recourse is to find a way to let it go to whatever degree is reasonable, and combat it when necessary/ possible.

Just start shooting. Perhaps it'll evolve into an idiot holocaust and it'll make the world a better place.

I constantly feel like I am the most intelligent person in the room throughout my day. It is very frustrating. I started to notice it sometime after I first started working. And people hate you when youre smarter than they are. When I meet someone smarter than myself, or that knows something I dont, I see it as an opportunity to possibly learn something from them.

And the sense of entitlement/me me me/Im more important than you attitude gets old fast. You can see it every where.

When I'm stuck in a circle of dumbdumbs, I take comfort in one fact, and one fact alone:

If everyone wasn't dumber then me, then I would be the dumbest..

Generally people seems to be ignorant and wanting to be spoon fed, that is common to most countries I've visited (for once, it's not only you guys in the states that has put up with random jackasses)
That said, I don't really think that being ignorant is the same thing as being stupid. Sweden has got a national iq average of 101, USA 98, and we still see the same behaviour around here. I blame the internet

Wisconsin Democratic State Senator Lena Taylor posted an online plea on Tuesday for a boycott of several consumer products manufactured and distributed within Wisconsin.
“Money talks! Why shouldn’t you buy the following: Dixie Cups, Vanity Fair Paper Products, Mardi Gras Napkins, Brawny and Sparkle Paper Towels, Angel Soft and Quilted Northern Toilet Paper…” Taylor wrote on her facebook page. “Your purchase supports destruction of democracy, two words…Koch Brothers. Join the boycott, send this to all of your Facebook Friends.”
Taylor’s ire is directed at products produced by Georgia Pacific.

According to the company’s website, Georgia-Pacific (GP) employs about 2,300 people in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Approximately 1,800 employees work at one of four manufacturing facilities and produce and distribute an array of commercial and retail brands of bath tissue, napkins, towels and other paper products.

Sometimes I'm talking to someone and it takes so much effort trying to make them understand. I have to actually talk stupid to get them to understand. Usually I'll start out talking normal, and it will end with a blank stare and them saying "What?". I have always considered myself average when it comes to intelligence. I've always known I could keep up with smart people if I just try a bit harder. But after I graduated high school and started seeing different parts of the country, I've noticed I was average among very smart people when I was in HS.

Growing up in a middle class area with a good public school system has set me up for a lot of frustration. I fear that more and more we are becoming dumb. I honestly blame technology. It's a double edge sword. Somethings really make our lives easier, safer, more efficient. But other things are slowly killing this world /rant

This was one thing that really impressed me about the Germans.

In Germany, the majority of restaurants are cash-only. They are a much more cash-reliant society than Canada or the US in general, but restaurants in particular are quite averse to plastic.

Drink orders are handled with impressive efficiency. Almost universally, they are not written down on an order pad. Instead, when your first drink arrives, it is placed on a paper coaster, and the waiter / waitress makes a tic mark on the coaster with a pencil. As each additional beer is brought to you, an additional tic mark is made on the coaster. (Wanna **** with your friends? Bring a pencil and make five extra marks on their coaster when they get up to use the WC.)

When it comes time to settle out at the end of a meal, the transaction is performed at your table by the same server who took your order and brought you your food / drinks. They have a change purse strapped around their waist. The server tabulates your bill with a pencil, and you hand them cash. They then perform the necessary subtraction in their head to determine the amount of change, and hand you the change directly from the purse.

That's it. No cash registers, no calculators. Ordinary German 20-somethings are sufficiently skilled in basic arithmetic to properly calculate a restaurant bill and the subsequent change without the assistance of a computer.

I can't even begin to convey in words how impressed I was by this, nor how pathetic I feel about being impressed by it.
