Also as a side note. Great example showed up in my inbox today.

An unnamed supervisor sent an email to everyone (his level and lower) with some tasking. In it he talked like he was a 14 year old girl texting...

"I need u all 2 support this with ur full cooperation."

IN A WORK EMAIL!

I once worked at a beer stop /carryout that was run by a really great, old guy that everyone called "Doc". He wouldn't permit us to punch in the dollar amount given for a transaction because he wanted us to count the change back to the customer. He said "You need to be able to do that in your head, son."

At the time I hated it, but in retrospect it was awesome. It made me think, and it's nice as a customer to have the cashier count back your change. It ensures accuracy and verbal interaction with the customer. So often now you get people that just hand you your item and change, and you have to check if it's right.

it also makes it easier to pocket money that way.

I was the night guy and did the drawer and deposit, so that never happened. Still rang in the sales and drawer still had to balance. I'm not particularly devious in that way and fail to see how that makes it easier, educate me in your evil ways, Brain.

If a guy bought $30 worth of stuff, I keyed in the sale, hit sub-total, and then cash/tendered without entering the 50.00 bill amount. That way the register just didn't calculate the change, I still had to give the guy his $20. I'm not seeing the fraud / theft opportunity.

I guess any cash transaction is an opportunity for theft if you don't ring in the sale at all, but that's not what I'm on about.

Braineack 09-15-2011 01:20 PM

the key is charging them the correct amount, learning due to repeativeness, and giving the change.

say you know a coffree is always $1.25

he hands you $5, you hand him back $3.75. you didn't record sale, you just opened drawer. then you take 1.25.

btw I used a calculater to get 3.75.

soloracer 09-15-2011 01:25 PM

I misinterpreted your original response. Thought you meant that not keying the rendered dollar amount somehow made it easier to pocket $$. You meant knowing totals in your head and not keying the sale at all.

Braineack 09-15-2011 01:25 PM

yes sir.

In April we had a skip level review. My boss's boss was reviewing everyone's sales over a conference call. We had a product with a quota of 10 per month that was on the agenda to discuss. I sold 0 in jan and feb but sold 133 of them in March. I was leading the country in sales. These are his exact words.

Ok Jacob, we have 0 for January, we have 0 for February, and a nice sale in March. I'd really like to see consistant selling through the months. What kind of deals do you have in the funnel for this quarter?

Me: I dont have anything in the pipe for April of May. I have another big deal lined up for middle of June. It should be an 80 unit deal. Which when closed will have me at 175% for the years quota.

Umm yeah, thats not how I want our sellers operating. I'd rather you be consistant than zero's for months while your working on a bigger deal.

your boss's boss should be set on fire

Braineack 09-15-2011 01:52 PM

isn't the purpose of a skip level so you can rat on YOUR boss without them knowing...

I would have handled it with. Well looks like I have 10 lined up for April and May!

Isn't there a way to make it look like you are doing them consistently? Still the same total sales, just spread it out? But still do them in one big deal. Probably not possible with how you have to record them, but there are somethings I do where I just document them as happening daily, but I do it all on one day.

jacob300zx 09-15-2011 03:57 PM

I was trending to hit 367% for the year, I was the top seller in the nation. This dude needed to suck a nut. WTF was going on in his head. A smart boss would of asked me how I was landing these big deals, then passed it along to the team as a best practice.

If I'm not mistaken, you said this was your bosses boss, correct? I assume that he has a title like "product line director."

Asking you how you did it and passing that information to others would be your bosses job. Your bosses bosses job is to create quarterly reports and do sales forecasting. That sort of thing is easy when sales and shipments are nice and consistent from one period to the next. What you are doing may be better for the company overall (eg: more profit) however it makes your bosses bosses job harder because his pretty charts and graphs get all messed up.

I'm being completely serious.

The lost opportunity, however, is to teach this method to enough salesman that the aggregate sales even out on a monthly basis. Thus, more profit, as well as consistent monthly totals. Someone over there needs to stop assuming that individual salesman must have consistent monthly totals in order for the company to have consistent monthly totals.
