Anybody else taking apart their lawn mower?

I got a mower for free and it likes to shit out on hills. I'm taking apart the engine right now and it's kind of fun. It has a weird ass configuration so I'm downloading a CD from demonoid with the service manuals for every B&S engine ever made :)

I hate mowing the lawn but taking the thing apart is pretty cool.

Maybe I'll eventually do this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GOaT7...eature=related

I have a 16 year old 2 cycle lawnboy. Bought it new, still runs perfect, starts on 2 pulls, they last forever.

Including the time my GF called and said the lawnmower quit running. I came home, started it, and after about a minute, I could tell by the sound what the problem was. She put unmixed gas in. Drained it, put in mixed gas, no problem.

One of the guys at work brought his lawn mower into the shop to sharpen the blades and clean it up. One of the other mechanics put a bunch of floor dry in the gas tank.

I'm sure he will be taking it apart soon.

I "honed" the cylinder in my riding mower with a grinding stone on a cordless drill and put a new piston in it after a friend borrowed it for 6 months and ran it without oil. Runs fine.

sweet, reel mowers kick ass. once upon a time i used to work maintenance at a golf course. cutting aprons and greens were a bitch because you had to use a reel mower, but they were gas powered and propelled by the cutting end so you had to make turns fast and perfect.

I also have a reel mower. I only break out the gas one when the cabbage gets too high for the reel to cut through. I think I'm gonna port & polish the head on the gas mower for an additional .25 HP.

yeah, big drawback of the reel mower is... well our grass is about 10 inches high right now. that'll choke this thing reel fast.

Or you could just DL one from B&S for free. :giggle:

Unless it's a How-to.

I just got a used Murray. Did the lawn tonight and then changed to oil to some Amsoil from Solfarick since I was ordering some anyways.

Do me a favor and go to the glove box of your car. Pull out the owners manual and then go try to tear your motor down to the bare block and put it back together again with all of the bolts torqued properly.

I pulled the head off my 22 year old Snapper (B&S engine) last weekend to clean off the carbon. The thing burns oil and starts hard when cold, but still runs well. A new plug, oil change and air filter every year, and they last forever.

Last spring I had to take one of these apart and get it running.

The farm bought it used from the state and never ran it. Steering was gone, none of the pulleys for the blades were attached, nor did it run. I had that fucker mowing 50 acres a week in no time. By far the coolest mower I ever used. :)

Thats why I said unless it was a how-to. I was trying to save you some time if it was the same thing. That's a good find you got.

I don't know of any service manuals that aren't how-tos.

Not quite as big as that, but we have a 72" Zero-turn SCAG, pretty fun.
