Anybody to RC stuff... Quadcoptor?

Apparently I need one of these things... needs to be powerful enough to carry my 2yr old around the backyard. Well, maybe not that big. Actually I just want one bad!
The DIY community on these things is pretty awesome, been looking through lots of forums and understand the basics... frame, motors, esc, board, battery, payload, etc... but I'm lacking the vocab. I'm thinking I can do all of the hardware myself, and you can buy the boards assembled.
You can buy fully assembled production ones and then do major upgrades to them, or comletely DIY, or parts-DIY.
I just want one I can manually fly that will carry a small camera. Anybody into these things wanna walk me through it?
