Anyone buy, fix, & sell cars 4 profit?
So does anyone on here do it or ever done it? Did it work out well? Was it worth it? Share some details.

its kinda easy to get caught up in it and over fix it and not get what you put in, not personal experience though
|
When I worked at Advance Auto, there was a guy that constantly bought 90's GM 3.1 and 3.8 cars and sold them for profit after fixing parts. He even got a 2003 Corolla for $500 after the owner put 4 gals instead of 4 qts of oil in. He drained it all out, filled it up properly and it ran fine.
|
i generally buy used cars cheap drive them a while and sell them maybe a small profit or loss but after a years worth of use i don't care too much about profit. if you really want to do it get a dealers license and go to auctions. though i have seen some REALLY shady shit come out of auctions. if you have the time and space buying cars and parting them out can make money
|
I've done it once with an old Cadillac, basically the guy was so old and sold it to me in MINT condition for $1500 and I turned around and sold it on ebay to a Caddy collector in Miami for $4000.
But I usually flip desireable car parts. Find some schmuck on craigslist or the miata.net classifieds or even locally that has no idea what their parts (usually stock stuff) is worth. I buy it for CHEAP and sell for profit. Its fun if you're absolutly sure you are going to make money. Case in point I bought a set of Mazdaspeed3 wheels and tires that came off a brand new car (40 miles on them) for $400, kept the tires for my MS3 and sold the wheels for $600 ;) |
i've done it a few times with Miatas.
bought my 94 Laguna for $1800, sold for $3500 - brake pads, bra over the dented nose, fixed passenger window, fixed broken cable on freshair/recirc, changed top with a good one already on the frame, front air dam & rear skirt bought one of my red 94's for $1000. PO said it needed a new head. borrowed a friend's trailer. checked compression. Zero. checked timing belt, it was off by 180 degrees. reset the timing belt. added power antenna. sold a few months later cuz i needed the money, to a friend who helped me with the timing belt job for $2500 bought a red 90 from a friend who needed a deposit for a new car. $1000. came with hardtop, new Tein Basics, new konig heliums with new T1Rs, JR sways, CF hood. Sold off that stuff for $1900. Replaced the thermostat housing temp sender. Replaced top with one on the frame for $100-$150. Sold car for $1000 |

That said, my roommate usually just finds cars that just need a bit of TLC...or kids that need money, buys them, drives them for a few months, turns them around and sells them. |
Saw that 4 gallon instead of 4 quarts thing once too. Used to work at Jiffy Lube when I was 17 and this magilla gorilla like character thought that once around for the dial on the oil gun was a quart. when he got to 4 gallons the oil was over flowing out the valve cover.

omgz dont ban me yet. wait until i post pics of my car, then my mission will be complete
|
Reg original topic: If I had a proper shop, I would probably give it a try, focusing on cars I know something about that are not super common, easy to work on and doesn't have super high spare parts prices... Like a Miata!
But I did do it kind of unintentionally once: Bought a -89 Opel Kadette for ~$100 (paid in Swedish kronor), repaired it with junk yard parts. Drove it for 1 year and sold it for ~$250. It was a horrible car though… Cred to Paul: Sounds like you know what you are doing there. |

to OP, i used to do that, when i was in school, you need money to make money, my problem was i would run up my CC by the time i sell the car so i would have to pay it off then and i was back at ground zero, but i made some decent profit...i bought cars at insurance autctions and did what i needed to get them sold, you just have to be patient and not give it away
but it all depends on your market place, when i lived in AK me and my brother in law were in it together and made lots of money...NC has no money, lol |

Yeah see when I dont care i ignore it. But hey diff. strokes for folks. (how come only 6 people on this forum can fuck around with each other?)
:-) |
i know a few guys that do that. essentially they are some combination of people who like to wrench and people who don't make enough at their day jobs to have a project car that they want to maintain.
this way they can keep doing the project/fun car thing and don't mind doin the wrenching required to make the money that funds it. |

Back on the topic as what the thread title says.
I had a 90' S13 with SR20DET red top that i got for $4,200 put in $2,000 drove it to hard and sold it for $3,500 with blown head gasket. So i lost on that one. But latly i've been scoring on prject cars such as 87' FC3S Gxl little rust and in nice condition for $1,400 and my cali. miata for $1,800. Both of these are going to be sold when done cause rust free cars up here are easy to sell to kids. So not so much on making profit from car sales but make more tuning and installing parts for people. Seems to be more easy. |
bout a bike for 1000 and sold it for 1500 all i did was 50 bucks of spray paint
|
If someone is looking to score a deal on a car to flip for profit, a buddy of mine (who is moving out of state in 10 days) needs to sell his Maxima. It's a mid 90's loaded model with leather n junk. Motor is sound, tranny is bad. It includes a second bad tranny and a tranny rebuild kit. **It's a tough tranny to rebuild.** Not recommended for amateur DIY, however any tranny shop will take care of it quick, or you can get a good junkyard tranny.
He wants $600 firm for the car and the spare tranny. He's moving in 10 days. If anyone's interested, PM me and I'll give you his phone number. |

Used to do that with Honda engines. Buy and engine for $50, sell for $250. Hell, I even managed to get $350 for my '90 CRX Si's D16A6!

You usually just need a dealer's license and bonding.
A lot of times, you can get in with a private wholesaler, have him buy for you, and give him a tip (like $200 per car). |

I agree with him on :jerkit: Anyone whose doing this needs a better job 2 of those were my personal cars that I needed to sell because my situation changed. It's because of my job that I have the time to do that work to begin with and I'm certainly not gonna sell for a loss.(although i did big time with the turbo setup i just removed) |
