Would recommend SS over fixie. If you get something with a flipflop rear hub you can switch just by turning the rear wheel around.

What is the difference between a single speed and fixied gear?

Fixed gear is, well, fixed. If the bike is rolling, the pedals are moving.

Single speeds have a freewheel. You can stop pedaling and coast.

Ah like the bikes we had when kids.

Then I got the terms wrong. Yes I was looking for a single speed then.

I've got a BMC SLC01 Pro Machine with Fast Forward F4R carbon wheels:

Not a very good pic of the bike but brings back good memories of the location!

The bike is probably worth more than my MX-5? :giggle:

I currently have a CAAD9 w full sram red. I also have a Specialized Langster Comp track bike that is fun for around the velodrome.

Shitty old pre-Wal-Mart-era Mongoose (cromoly frame though)

Rode singletrack in Jax, FL on it, went from 235 pounds to 184 in a matter of months. Added the basket and more streetable tires in Cali for duty as my daily.

Once back in the states I plan to replace it with a 29er, must have disc brakes and cannot have "grip-shift".

I hope you didn't have a fixie when you were a kid, I would have killed myself. Are you thinking about peddle brakes? Fixie is completely fixed, if you peddle backwards, you go backwards. If you go too fast, your feet fly off the peddles, and you're screwed. They're gorgeous when done right, aka no brakes, a machine in it's most simplist of forms.

My newest edition:

$400, 2" tires, and a lot of fun. Works well on the street, since I get bored on a road bike and start looking for curbs to jump off, which would not be good on an actual road bike. Only issue is low gearing. Max speed for my feet is roughly 37ishmph.

My parking lot cruiser. I bought this last year after I realized that my prized candy red Mongoose Supergoose on white Skyways from 7th grade had vanished from my parents shed.

Damn, some nice bikes here.

Me, wifey, and daddy have one of these but in a different color. AT the time they were ~$200 from Dicks/Sports Authority. Still in 1 piece after 5 years but meg's is a little rusty after she lived a block from the ocean a few years ago. We're going to White Face @ Lake Placid Labor day weekend with the bikes to play on their trails. If I destroy it i'll get something more worthy. Hopefully i don't destroy myself in the process.

My brother just picked up the fancy version with better/more suspension travel and disc brakes off amazon. His seat is comfy, but I'm mostly standing when I ride so whatever. And it seems I can modulate my good ol centerpull brakes better than his *new* budget? cable discs.

Just started riding two years ago. I sold my Specialized Big Hit a few months ago, looking for something new for this year. Thinking a Knolly Delerium T or Giant Reign.

Luckily, I live in on of the best cities in the world for Mtn. Biking. The North Shore is 10 mins away, and Whistler is 1.5hrs. :D. Not to mention a ton of other local spots of the shore.

My old big hit on the old Miata... :D

Difference is, when you're finished after a rainy wet muddy day... my interior will still be clean.
