asian tiger mosquitos

so bug bites drive me absolutely nuts. Lately outside of my house and sometimes inside i've been getting bit by a ridiculous amount of asian tiger mosquitos. I couldn't figure out where they were coming from until today i looked outside a window on the second floor. The neigbors divorced about 8 months ago and they never took care of the pool, now it's green like a pond. I'm positive this is where they are coming from. They are lazy and i know they aren't going to do anything about it. What can i do that is cheap, easy, and will get rid of the mosquitos? I don't care if it destroys the pool or not. It's an in ground pool so i can't exactly just pop the thing.

It might be kind of late in the season, but they sell these tablets you can throw into a pond that kill mosquito larvae. You can get them at places like Agway, maybe Home Depot. Another week or 2 and the weather will probably take care of them. At this point, unless it gets real cold at night pretty soon you're probably SOL.

Mach929 10-12-2007 07:52 PM

it's in the 60-70s during the day and they're still biting. it's a pretty big pool, how much of this stuff would i have to buy and how expensive is it. I mean i don't even want to wash my car tomorrow like i planned, i'll get bit up too much.

brgracer 10-12-2007 08:04 PM

Not much you can do besides wait for the cold or put on lots of deet repellant. There was a story in the local news a few weeks back about these mosquitos moving into our area. I've been bit quite a few times during the day as well. Kinda sucks to have daytime mosquitos.

Or you can get some bats, IIRC one bat can eat like 100 mosquitos a night...or you can have me drive my car up around your house after the next dyno day when I blow the new engine and smoke out the whole area... :)

Not that I am necessarily advocating it, but when did you drain your oil last, and where did you store it:gay:

Mosquito extermination Exxon Valdez style?

Mach929 10-12-2007 08:40 PM

haha smoky death.

Mach929 10-12-2007 08:41 PM

i do have plenty of waste oil, nice!

cjernigan 10-12-2007 08:44 PM

Hyrdogen peroxide is some crazy stuff. It eats everything. Not the stuff you get in 3% concentrations to wash cuts. More like the 80% solutions, maybe it would eat them up, that or a bunch of clorox.

patsmx5 10-12-2007 08:55 PM

Clorox works well. I did this to my grandma's next door neighbors pool. I guess they moved out and the pool was just breeding mesqutoes and was green. I poured in 5 gallons of clorox and that did the trick.

fuck, beat me to it. I have a 55 gallon drum half full of old motor oil. lulz.

xturner 10-12-2007 10:18 PM

The tablets are pretty cheap - like $6-8 worth will cover a decent-size pool. They're called Mosquito Dunks. I like the oil slick idea - cheaper and probably lots faster.

firedog25 10-12-2007 11:02 PM

Hey, why the fuck do mean bugs have to be given foreign names? Like Africanized Bees and shit? lol

Also, people like me get destroyed by flesh eating insects wherever they live and I visit. Hawaii, Florida, Maryland, etc.,etc. they kill me. My solution? Live in the fucking desert.

Mymiataflys 10-13-2007 11:06 AM

the tablets won't work unless the pump is circulating the water. if you can get a layer of oil ontop of the water that will stop any further breeding.

Stealth97 10-13-2007 11:10 AM

Clorox FTW.

Mach929 10-13-2007 11:23 AM

i think the oil will work the best, and will be a more permanent solution for next spring/summer. besides, it's free and i hate the neighbor:vash: this will be good for 3am

btw they are called asian tigers because they supposedly came to the us in old tires from china into texas and worked their way through the east coast.

Mymiataflys 10-13-2007 01:32 PM

the sun will also degrade any clorox in a mater of a few days. I have a 26K gallon inground pool... that stays crystal clear 365 days a year.

miatamania 10-14-2007 07:19 PM

do you live in the city limits? report their ass. or make a complaint to the police. Fucking dumbasses.

Mach929 10-14-2007 07:38 PM

no i'm right outside the city, i think it may be getting cold enough now but i'm sure next summer they'll be in full force again so i'll probably just dump oil in it as environmentally unfriendly as it sounds breeding mosquitos can't be much better.

Arkmage 10-14-2007 07:41 PM

wait till the leave town for vacation or something and drain the pool. They sounds like they would be far too lazy to re-fill it.
