I'm convinced they are trying to balance the perfect ratio water to gas, without being caught.

single cylinder motorcycles are much more sensitive to this than the average honda accord.

Call the state weights/measures department. They do all the inspections, have the ability to shut them down/fine them into oblivion.

I have seen numerous tanks with water in them, I have never seen water get into a car. It's not in a stations best interest to mess with their gas...

So is there really THAT big of a difference between brands of gas, or is it one of those "it all comes from the same place, man" kind of things?

It all comes from the same holding tank at the transfer station. Additives/ethanol are added while loading the truck.

An enlightening thread for sure.

Heard over and over pumping gas from a station while the tanker is there filling up the in ground tanks is a no-no. How much truth to this?

I heard the pumps have screens / filters on them. How true is this? And if true, how often are they cleaned / checked?

There is truth in that.... More so at old sites. If the stations is <5-10 years old the tanks are still fairly clean and there's not much that gets kicked up.

Keep in mind that the underground tanks rarely get replaced. 20-30+ years is not uncommon. Even if the station has a new building/pumps/etc the tanks might be 20 years old still.

Most gas pumps have 10micron filters on them. Diesel have 30micron filters on them. No idea what a fuel filter on a car is rated for.

They get replaced when they plug and people complain that the pump goes slow.

Filters are not a requirement. There is no way to tell from the outside of a dispenser weather or not they have filters.

Some of the filters have the ability to detect water and phase separation. They have media that swells up and stops the flow of fuel when they do. Probably 50% or more sites around here have that type of filter.

So this station likely has four different tanks in the ground rather than two?

I suspect it's got a tank of 87 and a tank of 93 and it makes the other two by blending them at the pump.

Any stories about explosions?

A setup like that probably has 2 tanks and blends. Blending VS separate tanks seems to be a very regional thing. Around here that station would probably have 3 tanks and no 91, Or have 4 tanks and 91 would be no ethanol.

Blending was a big thing back in the 90s and early 2000s, then everyone figured out they need deliveries more often, pumps break down and have more issues, not as accurate, etc.

Other than a few minor fires in pumps from lightning/power surges, I haven't encountered anything that was OMFGBBQ.
Even nozzle/static fires don't happen that often, maybe 1-2 in 5 years.
