I wouldn't bother with the Eisbock version. I just don't like it.

My father was being nice and picked up a case of Miller whatever WITH LIME for me at the class six store on base. Acckk! Horrible crap. I may share it with the neighbors. I see why it was on clearance. If the choice was to drink it or be thirsty I'd have to think about it.

This is pretty much exactly what you'd expect from the name: a straight-up lager. Smooth, easy-drinking and tasty.
For you east-coasters, think Yuengling lager and you'll be right on the mark.

I like Yuengling (sp?). I usually get one when I am in that part of the country.

The Blue Star Brewery in San Antonio makes an excellent Irish style Stout if you ever are in this area. It is creamy, smooth, chocolate overtone goodness.

Tried Shiner's newest seasonal, Fröst. It's a dortmunder style pilsner. I'm not normally a pilsner fan but this one was decent. Very mild compared to some of Shiner's other seasonal varieties (I'm looking at you smokehasse nastiness).

Had myself a Trappist Chimay Premiere Red tonight. 750ml bottle poured into a Chimay Trappist goblet. Surprisingly smooth for an %8.00 ABV ale.



My New Year's resolution was to try at least 5 new beers a week for the remainder ofmy time in Germany, doing pretty good so far.

I am in Boulder, CO right now on business. Apparently CO is the land of microbreweries. I went to the Walnut Street Brewery last night and had an Old Elk Brown Ale. Excellent.

Bought a case of Yuengling Bock Beer on Saturday. For those who like Yuengling Black and Tan, this is supposedly a seasonal brew, and I gotta say WOW. I had it on draft a few months ago and was told that it was a special item only available on tap to commemorate the 180th anniversary of the Yuengling brewery. Then saturday I went to the local distributor and saw it in cases and asked, "how long has this been here" the girl at the register said, "we just got that in yesterday". I bought a case and must say it's outstanding! Black and Tan is Porter mixed with Premium. Bock Beer is Porter mixed with Lord Chesterfield Ale. It kinda reminds my of drinking a 1/2 and 1/2 at the local irish pub (Guinness and Bass).

From Deschutes Brewery in Oregon... Obsidian Stout


Had one tonight for the first time on tap. Very, very good stout. It has some hoppiness so there is more complexity and bite than an Irish style stout (which I had back-to-back with this one). Though the brewer says in the description that it is hoppy and bitter, I did not get that at all. I think it is well balanced, and that is coming from someone that does not like IPAs much. It went well with a hummus platter and some prosciutto.

Yuengling is brewed in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, like 15 minutes from my house. There is a ton of microbreweries around me too like, Legacy, The Lion Brewery, Golden Avalanche, Bethlehem Brew Works. Rolling Rock is made in Latrobe, PA. I think Genesee is in PA, but it's gross. My friend got "Genesee Cream Ale" one fine summer day and invited me over. I drank a **** load of it, we walked down to "the A-Hole" (The American House bar) and I had 2 sips of yuengling lager, walked outside and barfed all over the sidewalk. No more Genny's cream ale for me.

Tonight I had a Harpoon Winter Warmer. It has lots of good holiday spice, good body, not overly sweet. Very malty overall, in stark contrast to the Sierra Nevada Celebration which is at the hoppier end of your holiday ales.


Last week we went for dinner at a Belgian-French place downtown. I enjoyed a Piraat with my mussels & frites.


Then the terrific Rochefort 8 with my roasted rabbit loin. There are better beer-food pairings than this, but dammit I wanted to eat rabbit and drink this Rochefort which I haven't had in years. Amazing complexity of fruity and spicy flavors and aromas that is difficult to really describe to someone who isn't already familiar with Belgian beers. Most Trappist ales are quite good. This one is just an orgy of magnificence for your taste buds.

I don't think the Deschutes stuff is very widely distributed outside the PNW, and if you find any it will more likely be the Black Butte Porter or Mirror Pond Pale Ale, and both are pretty good. Mirror Pond is common in Seattle bars & restaurants and I drank a shitload of it when I lived there. It was a great go-to when there was nothing else interesting on the beer list.

Yuengling Bock Beer is like mowing your lawn while drinking Pabst Blue Ribbon all day, and then you go out that night for a nice lobster dinner, and you drink Chimay Red. Your taste buds can't even understand what is going on, they think you spoiled them and have no idea why. The planets align, and at that very moment in your life, you are totally at ease.
