I have a huge problem- I just tried Blue Moon Winter Abby Ale and it tastes just like something else. Problem is I can't remember what. Any one have any thoughts?

Had one of these today, a local brew made by Real Ale Brewery in Blanco, Texas. Someone bought a 6-pack to a wrenchfest at my place today. Very, very good.
Shade Tree Coffee Porter, a seasonal beer. I should try to get more if it is still available but i think it may not be.

In the process of having a weekend full of sours with a good buddy from college. By tomorrow we should be 10 sours in. I will post up when I get back to work on Monday or Tuesday. Also if any of you guys ever want to try something I post up and can't get it where you are, let me know and we can setup a trade. I have completed 34 on BeerAdvocate with another 5-6 pending with a few more being planned so I can help you with packaging advice, etc.

What would it take to get you to let a bottle of that GI Bourbon County go split?
EDIT: Expecting a full rundown on the sours you had and a wish list of any of the NOT super-rare sours you might want from over here and I'll see what I can do for you and your buddy's next sour night, I was blown away when I saw the price of good Belgian sours in the States. Stuff I can get for 4-5 euro a bottle was going for crazy prices like $35-40/bottle.

Long weekend of new brews for me. Here goes...
Allagash Confluence Ale: B+
"January 2009 Vintage. Served from bottle into a Duvel tulip. Poured a hazy deep yellow with a four finger massively fluffy off-white head that actually bulged up larger and larger in the middle of the glass but very very slowly subsided to one finger with lots of sitting. Maintained nice lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, dark fruit, and funk. The flavor was of sweet malt, sour funk, and subtle fruit. It had a medium feel on the palate with medium carbonation. Overall there were some very interesting notes going on in this one. I really had mixed feelings on it. In my opinion there was just too much 'funk' in this one and not enough sour/tart going on. Good, but just not all that awe-inspiring. Interlude is still my favorite offering in this category from Allagash."
Avery Brabant: A-
"Bottled on February 10, 2009; 694 cases produced. Served from bottle into a Duvel tulip. Poured dark brown with a minimal tan head. Maintained decent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, sour funk, oak, and an earthy note. The flavor was of sweet malt, smooth funk, and a woody note. It had a medium feel on the palate with high carbonation. Overall this one was quite nice. You can totally get the wood aspect of this from the barrel. The woody note helps to mellow out the funk flavor if you aren't really a fan of it. This is a pretty nice brew that I'm glad I got the opportunity to try."
Cascade The Vine: A
"Served from bottle into a Duvel tulip. Poured a hazy yellow orange with a minimal white head. Maintained nice lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt and a sour note only. The flavor was of sweet malt, sour, and subtle apple. It had a light feel on the palate with high carbonation. Overall this was an excellent example of the style in my opinion. It had a very nice flavor and good aroma going on here. I really enjoyed the fact that there wasn't really a funk to this one and just sour notes. Hope to try more offerings from Cascade in the future as this one set the bar pretty high. This was the favorite of my buddy and I of the nine sours/wild ales we tasted and reviewed this weekend."
Highland Cold Mountain Winter Ale: A-
"2010 Vintage. Served from a 1-liter swing-top bottle into a Stone nonic. Poured a deep copper with a one finger off-white head that subsided to a minimal amount slowly. Maintained nice lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, cloves, coriander, and caramel. The flavor was of sweet malt, cloves, chocolate, and caramel. It had a light feel on the palate with mild carbonation. Overall this one had some pretty nice spice mixtures going on here. It was very well balanced up-front and then came through with the typical warmer spices on the tailend. This one is a must try if you are a fan of winter warmers."
Brouwerij Van Steenberge Monk's Café Flemish Sour Red Ale: B+
"Served from bottle into a Duvel tulip. Poured a dark brown with a one finger off-white head that subsided to a minimal amount slowly. Maintained excellent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt and an earthy sour funk. The flavor was of sweet malt, an earthy sour funk, and sugar on the followthrough. It had a light-medium feel on the palate with mild carbonation. Overall this was pretty interesting. It had a nice flavor and good aroma going on here however the earthy note to the sour/funk was quite interesting. This one is a must try for any fan of the style or even if you like really earthy flavors. Might actually be a good gateway into sours if you are an earthy lover."
New Belgium Lips of Faith La Folie: A-
"Served from growler into a Duvel tulip. Poured a deep dark brown with a minimal off-white head. Maintained decent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt and sour funk. The flavor was of sweet malt, tart, and sour. It had a light feel on the palate with medium-high carbonation. Overall this was quite the nice sour brew. It had a good aroma and nice flavor going on here. The sour note comes on pretty strong after a nice tart note. My buddy who split the growler with me complained of it being a little too sour on the followthrough, but I found it pretty nice. Growler went down with ease... Regardless, this is a must try for any sour fan out there."
Ommegang Ommegeddon: B
"Batch #4; May 2009. Served from bottle into a Duvel tulip. Poured a dark yellow-orange with a two finger slightly off-white head that subside to half a finger slowly. Maintained decent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, funk, and slight golden apple. The flavor was of sweet malt, funk, dark fruit, and alcohol. It had a medium feel on the palate with high carbonation. Overall this one wasn't that bad, but it also wasn't that great either. The followthrough was kind of pungent with alcohol while cold, but mellowed out just a hint upon warming up. Decent aroma and flavor here, but nothing too memorable though."
Petrus Aged Pale: A-
"Served from bottle into a Duvel tulip. Poured a hazy yellow-orange with a one finger white head that subsided to a minimal amount quickly. Maintained excellent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt and slight funk. The flavor was of sweet malt, tart, sour, and slight wood. It had a light feel on the palate with mild carbonation. Overall this is quite an excellent brew for the style. I have had this more times than I care to remember, and will be having again in the future I'm sure. Just an all-around great representation of the style. Has a nice flavor and aroma here and is a must try for any sour fan out there or a fan of the style."
Petrus Oud Bruin: B+
"Served from bottle into a Duvel tulip. Poured deep brown with a half finger tan head that subsided to a minimal amount fairly quickly. Maintains decent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma is comprised of sweet malt and slight sour funk. The flavor was of sweet malt, slight sour, and fruit on the followthrough. It had a light feel on the palate with high carbonation. Overall this brew was pretty nice and smooth. Had a nice flavor, but the aroma was kind of weak as far as intensity. The flavor was very pleasing though and I would recommend this to anyone who likes the style without hesitation."
Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale: A
"2010 Vintage. Served from bottle into a Stone nonic. Poured yellow-orange with a one and a half finger off-white head that subsided to one finger very slowly. Maintained excellent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt and massive citrus/bitter hops. The flavor was of sweet malt, citrus hop, and subtle fruit upon swallowing. It had a medium feel on the palate with mild carbonation. Overall this brew was quite excellent. Very good aroma and a very good flavor to back that up. Not a lot missing in any aspect on this one. Very well balanced flavor that messes together quite nicely. If you like anything hoppy and have not had this one before, get off your *** and do so..."
Brouwerij Verhaeghe Vichtenaar: A-
"Served from bottle into a Duvel tulip. Poured reddish-brown (similar to tea) with a minimal off-white head. Maintained decent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt and sour funk. The flavor was of sweet malt, tart, sour, and subtle fruit. It had a light feel on the palate with high carbonation. Overall this brew was quite excellent. Really glad that Ed at The Community Tap suggested that I give this one a little while back. Very nicely balanced flavor and good aroma without doubt. Actually mine and my buddies second favorite brew out of all the sours we had this past weekend. A must try for any sour fan out there without a doubt."

Few of those I can't wait to get my hands on.. I'm not a fan of the La Folie SBA at all though, had it once and couldn't even finish a glass, let alone the bottle.
Having a few Mikkelers tonight, starting off with a Stateside, then I'm going for my Drinkin the Sun, who knows where after that.

Today I went to the local distributor. I usually don't find anything that tickles my tastebuds, but I usually end up walking out with a case of Yuengling Premium Cans. I call that "garage beer", cause I can invite my motorheaed friends over, and we can hang out in the garage. I wrench on my CRAP: (1950 ****** CJ-3A, or 1978 Triumph Bonneville) and just hang out and shoot the ****. Every now and then, the local distributor does get something I can buy and enjoy. Today was a double. I bought (1) case of Spaten Sample pack, which consisted of 1/4 Spaten Munich, 1/4 Spaten Optimator, 1/4 Spaten Dinkle?, and 1/4 Fransiskaner. $34.49. I was sold.
Then this:
Troegs variety pack:
4 different kinds of beer from Troegs Brewery, they're in the garage, and I'm too lazy to walk downstairs to tell you what 4.
You guys drink anything new?

Discovered a terrific new sour this past Sunday, on the recommendation of a friend here in Punta Gorda. If I'd have known it was a Lindeman's up front I'd have probably been prejudiced (most of their stuff is too damn fruity) but this one was a proper, wild-yeast Gueuze:

I bought a bottle of Cuvee (I'm a HUGE Lambic/Gueuze fan) and waited about 6 months to try it I was so scared of it being horrible. I was thoroughly impressed. It's nothing too terribly special, but with its price point and the fact that its a Lindeman's its really not all that bad. Good beer to get started in the Lambic world with.
I had a bunch of nice brews from US breweries while I was home (went home for three weeks for Christmas) Brooklyn Black Ops being one, FFF Alpha Klaus being another. Highly suggest trying both if you can find them.
Pretty useless post but maybe it will kick start the BOTD thread.

Recently bought a case of Buffalo Bills Blueberry Oatmeal Stout. It was 7.5% alcohol, didn't taste like an oatmeal stout at all, but rather like a pale bock lager that left a blueberry aftertaste with a hint of nutmeg. I was dissatisfied, but my IPA loving coworker went nuts over it.

I received a Winter Classics Sampler case of Samuel Adams selections for Christmas. I wasn't terribly excited about the chances of finding something I would really like because I'm not a Sam Adams fan. I found something that surprised me- Holiday Porter. It is more malty and sweeter than most Baltic or even English porters I have had and really reminds me of Old Rasputin, just a wee bit lighter. It is only available in the Winter Classics Cases (which sucks) but you might be able to find some of them around still. It was a nice find.
"Samuel Adams Holiday Porter is brewed using East Kent Goldings and Fuggles, traditional British ale hops, as well as the German Noble hop Spalt Spalter. It is dry hopped with Goldings hops to give an even more pronounced British hop character in both aroma and flavor. A small portion of flaked oats are also added to the brew’s complex blend of malt flavors. The oats help round off any roughness from the highly roasted malts and add a touch of silkiness to the finish."
The Chocolate Bock that also comes in the pack is also a pleasant surprise. I like the slightly sweet, dark richness of it. It is really nice to enjoy when you come in from outside when it is really cold out, like 50* or so...

I really enjoyed the Chocolate Bock I had in December, like REALLY enjoyed it, I couldn't figure out why wither as it realyl wasn't all that special. I am a Sam Adams fan though, I don't think they're the greatest thing ever by any means but its a good drinking beer when I'm feeling cheap.

Sixshooter, you really need to hit up Cigar City Brewery. Its on Spruce, just a block or so west of Dale Mabry. Bolita is one of my favorites from them, but they do a ton of small innovative batches of stuff too, thats only availble on tap or by growler
According to the Cigar City Brewing website, Bolita is an Imperial Northern English Brown Ale that has a complex malt forward character with notes of chocolate, toffee and hints of roasted nuts in the finish. Over Thanksgiving we visited family in Jacksonville Florida and the only beer I was excited about getting my hands on was the Cigar City brews. This brewery won a gold medal at the 2009 Great American Beer Festival for their Humidor IPA and I made it my personal mission to get a few bottles of their beers to enjoy at home. This is the first of their beers that I cracked open and it did not disappoint. The 750 ml bottle poured a deep rich brown with a beautiful tan head full of tight persistent bubbles. The aroma was very malt forward with hints of chocolate, bread and a wonderful nut characteristic. The flavor consisted of sweet malt and chocolate balanced with a nice roasted bitterness. It was full bodied with a creamy mouth feel that added to the sweetness. The finish was somewhat dry and for a big beer I could have had several rather than a single pint. At 9.0% this was a big beer but exceptionally smooth and flavorful. I can’t wait to try the others I brought back and after trying the Bolita, Cigar City lived up to their reputation.
