Thinking about a turbo diesel.

Well, you didn't have any specs listed other than turbo and diesel.
Should be under $35K with some miles. I passed on a 6K mile 2011 for $39K because it was just too expensive for me when I'm going to burn it down in 3 years.
If you want better mileage I don't know if there is a better (any?) option in the US than the Jetta but I can't speak to reliability of VW's at all.

You mention $35,000, is that your ceiling?
Look into the TDI Jetta. My buddy has a MY08 or 09 with well over 200k miles and aside from timing belt changes (he does them himself, you should be able to as well), he's had no issues. I know, I know, a VW without gremlins, perhaps he's lucky, but I feel the TDI Jettas are all blessed with good fortune.

with small gas cars capable of 40mpgs at a fraction of the cost (car and fuel).....why do you insist on a turbodiesel?
America is behind the times with turbodiesels, frankly. The latest engines are pretty amazing for most drivers.
Check out the new triple-turbo diesel that BMW has just released. 'Tis interesting.
I was a diesel sceptic until my dad bought an '05 UK-spec 535d, and had it remapped. It makes around 315bhp, and one gazillion lb/f of torque. The latter means it feels like it makes 315hp everywhere in the rev range.
The damping is awful, the tyre noise and the wind noise around the A pillar is sub-par, and the whole thing as a package feels like a bad compromise, but that's all another matter...

when wife was looking for a commuter couple years back she ended up with vw tdi. i was dissapointed that subaru and honda both had really good press on their diesel motors (this is 2 years back) and i still haven't seen anything from them. iirc hondas was in the 60mpg range and subarus was similar.
this says mazda is bringing one in this year. huh
